Bob Ryan Blog – GAMES that had SIX LEAD CHANGES!

We all love games that go back and forth. First one team leads, then the other. The usual unpredictability of HS football really becomes noticeable as the leads flips back & forth. Check these games out….each one had SIX different LEAD changes after the opening score!

Savannah and Lafayette (St Joe, MO) both came into the game unbeaten. The only score in the 1st qtr was a Savannah FG. Lafayette took their 1st lead of the game on a 47 yard pass to Preston Martin from Drew Cortez. Savannah scored the next 8 points of 2nd quarter including a safety (2nd lead change).  Score at half 11-7 Savannah. After Lafayette scored on a 21 yard TD strike to Tyler Burgess from Cortez (3rd lead change), Savannah runs back the KO to the house (4th lead change) making the score 18-14 at the end of 3rd quarter. Savannah extended their lead to 25-14 with the first score of final quarter but Lafayette rallied and scored the next two touchdowns (including another KO return for a score) to grab back a 28-24 lead (5th lead change). The Savages took the final lead change and the final score when Chase Simpson hauled in a 34-yard touchdown grab with 2 minutes remaining  and made the score 33-26. The statistical leader of the game was Lafayette’s QB-Drew Cortez who was 21 of 39 for 253 yards. Savannah stretches its record to 4-0 while Lafayette dropped to 3-1.

In the AAA Conference, St Francis Borgia HS snatched a 10-0 first quarter lead when Kelan Winters scrambled 79 yards for a TD with only twelve seconds left in the quarter.  The Dragons scored the next 2 TD’s but missed one extra point (1st lead change). The Knights scored again late in the quarter as Tyler Breckenkamp latched onto a 35 yard pass from Justin Baylard with only 1:42 until the half-time buzzer.(2nd lead change) but they missed the kick so it was 16-13 Borgia at half.  In the 3rd quarter, SM scored on a Cody Beile run of 9 yards. Again the kick failed to make it 19-16 SM at the end of 3 quarters. The 4th time the lead changed was when Justin Baylard plowed over from 1 yard and this time the kick was true to make it 23-19 Borgia. SM regained the lead less than a minute later when Carl Crimi scored on a 65 yard bomb from Cody Beile. Beile ran over the 2 point conversion so it was 27-23 as the lead changed for the 5th time. Again, Borgia with only 1:40 left in the game, Drake Raftery caught the 2nd TD pass of the game of Justin Baylard on a 32 yard strike. THAT was the 6th and final lead change as Borgia won this thriller 30-27.
