Bob Ryan Blog – Week 6 – SLUH / DeSmet

DeSmet uses late safety to beat SLUH …

The DeSmet Spartans raised their record to 3-3 with a 16-14 win over the charged-up Jr Billikens.  The game opened with the Jr Bills going three and out and punting a short punt into a wind-surge that gave the Spartans great field position as they took over at the 37 yard line.  Four running plays took the ball down to the 9 yard line. A Scott Sinovich pass deflected off a Spartan receiver and SLUH intercepted in the end zone. This would be the first of 6 Spartan turnovers in the game. The Spartans scored late in the first quarter to open the scoring when Sr Billy Haas got behind the SLUH secondary and latched onto a 33 pass from Scott Sinovich.  The Spartans turned the ball over three times in the 2nd quarter. Late in the quarter, a turnover led to a short field for SLUH and a 12 yard pass from Sam Sykora to David Jackson to tie the game at half. Early in the 2nd half, after a long interception by Chris Stahl of 58 yards, David Jackson caught a 39 yard pass from Sykora to give the Jr Bills a 14-7 lead. Jackson was named the Custom Graphics Standout Player of the game for his receiving and play in the secondary. DeSmet answered with a drive that resulted in a 10 yard run by QB Scott Sinovich as he plowed over a defender to cross the goal line. Score was then tied at 14-14. It would remain that way until SLUH was pinned back deep in their territory and forced to punt. The punt was blocked out of the end zone providing DeSmet with a 16-14 lead that they would never relinquish. The Lions Choice Athlete of the Game was DeSmet defender Zach Westling who was outstanding on defense for the Spartans and recorded three sacks for the game. Click here for the game
