Dear Santa by Bob Ryan

dear santa picIt’s that time of year…. Santa is deluged with letters from millions of people… mostly children…. but not all of them…. for what people want for Christmas..we were able to sneak a peek with a few…

….Dear Santa,

I asking for some common sense for the Lou. As I told the 1-2-3 Club at their Luncheon…Yeah, Jason Heyward is a decent, good player but he’s not a star in any category, in any way…the Cards went high enough.              Whitey

….Dear Santa,

I want some respect. I coach a college football team that has been ranked #1 for much of the season. My team went 13-0 and won the ACC championship game. But…everyone still remembers our wins over Wofford and Appalacian State so the “bookies” have us as 25 to 1 odds (the worst odds of any of the four teams) on winning the National Championship.                                                     Dabo

…Dear Santa,

I’m asking for more strength. I’m a day-day SS for a baseball team in St. Louis. I’ve been carrying around an extra “n” for my entire life and now that I’m 34, it’s getting heavy. It’s really not necessary. As I get older, my bat is already slowing down so I need all my strength.                                                                            Jhonny

….Dear Santa,

I’m in the management of a MLB team in Cincinnati. I’d like to have a pair of binoculars so that I could see the frontrunners in our division during this upcoming baseball season.                                                                                   Walt

….Dear Santa,

I want some love. My team is located in St. Louis and we’ve been on tough times for quite a while now. Sure I brought in a “has been” coach, a person who’d never been a General Mgr, promoted my team as little as possible, made sure that the 1st Dome deal had an easy out for us…btw…I slipped that in on the actual signing day…no one had ever seen that criteria prior to that day….. I NEVER considered this a permanent location…heck, St Louis hits its apex with the 1904 world fair…it’s 2015…. the money is in LA or London….why don’t these fans love me for giving them 20 years of NFL Football? They really didn’t expect me to stay here, did they?            Stan

…Dear Santa,

I’d like my just due from the MLB. I love baseball. I hustled constantly, I have the records for the most hits in the MLB, I played a long career, managed, loved baseball. I loved the thrill of challenges…so on occasion I wagered on baseball…no big deal…it never interfered with my desire to win…but I’ve been refused entrance into the HOF. I willing to bet that they’ll do it the minute that I die !             Pete

….Dear Santa,

All I want for Christmas is two good thumbs! Last year I led the NL in games caught (134) while missing the last 13 games of the year. This year I’ve already had my 2nd thumb surgery….please Santa….heal me up.                                    Yadi

….Dear Santa,

I’d like to begin my college education but need help with the requirements to attend….tuition is no concern to me….since I’ve never been to college, it’ll be great. I can shower all my teammates ..or future teammates.. with gifts, donate generously to the school, and maybe even buy…oops…support good football players. Further Santa…I want the college to the U. of Kentucky.     Kobe

….Dear Santa,

I’m asking for a real 2nd chance. I’ve played 1B for the Cardinals, had a terrific 2014 post season but missed most of 2015 due to injuries.   It seems like I’ve been “written off” by management and the fans.                              Matt

Dear Santa,

…..I’m an NBA coach, please send me some true NBA players….real players….my team, the Philadelphia 76’ers, is 1-24 for the year and they just can’t play.           Brett

Dear Santa,

….I’m asking for some restraint. I’m ready to put my hands on the shoulders of 3 of my aging friends in St Louis (Molina, Peralta, Holliday) but they’re in denial. I can only wait so long so help me look the other way.                                           Fr. Time

…Dear Santa,

I would like the NFL to change the starting times of their games ….ya see I can’t sleep at night but I find myself snoozing away during every Rammies game…ya know with the excitement of the offense it’s like a sleeping pill.     Joe the StL Rams Fan

….Dear Santa,

I own a Professional hockey team in St. Louis. I’m asking for ONE…but two would be terrific….playoff series victories.   I’ve worked hard to bring in good players, treat them and pay them well, have an avid fan base but we’ve been bitterly disappointed in the past few years so this gift is really essential.                                 Tom

….Dear Santa,

Could I get a 20 point lead to start every conference game for Christmas? I coach basketball at a school in Columbia, MO. We don’t have the talent…yet…I can coach but I need wins to keep my job.                                                    Kim

….Dear Santa,

Please send me some patience. I have an owner in my football league in the Midwest who will resort to any tactic, spend whatever it takes, walk over anyone to escape his current location. I’ve been keeping him off but I’m running out of options.    Roger

Dear Santa,

Please let the readers that made it to the bottom of this list get an extra “goodie” from you on Christmas for their perseverance.                                Bob

  1. Denis Heneghan says:

I am glad Heyward is in Chicago so he can spend some time with players his own age. How can you pay someone $23 million a year for driving in 60 runs? I don’t care how many fly balls he catches. I would say the Cubs – Cards games will be more intense this year. Maybe even Jason will get a few bruises.
If Kronke would have just let Kahn buy the Rams we wouldn’t be having this discussion.

  2. John Rocco says:

Bob, good job as always. I say you’re right on. If I could like to add one wish for Barry Odom. Let’s hope he gets a couple of 4 or 5 star players under his tree!!!

    John

  3. Laura Baird says:

Great write up as always and Merry Christmas to my favorite sports blogger!
    Laura

  4. Mike Hopkins says:

Another creative and thought-provoking blog, Bob. I have a feeling–and some hope–that Heyward will revert to his 220 batting average in Chicago.
