The Dragons jumped ahead in bottom of the 1st when leadoff hitter Zach Ortinau drew a walk and was driven home by the next batter-Joe Ross. The leading hitter on the SM roster, Ross doubled to deep left field scoring Ortinau.
SM pushed across a run in the bottom of the 2nd when Luke Yelnick drew a walk to begin the inning. One out later, Alex Hines attempted a sacrifice bunt. The errant DB throw went past 1B down the RF line allowing Yelnick to come all the way around the bases with an unearned run making it 2-0—SM.
In the 4th with 2 outs and the bases clear, SM got three consecutive hits from Luke Yelnick, Mark Cooper and Alex Hines to tack on another run making it 3-0. Next batter, Zach Ortinau, had his line drive caught on a wonderful running catch by DB CF Jerry McCloskey. Ironically, McCloskey caught all three outs in this inning for the Cavaliers.
Meanwhile, Dragon starter, Matt Causino, breezed through the first 4 innings. He retired the first 11 batters then Tom Bick lined a double to snap the hitless streak. In the 5th the Cavs Jason Jordan led off with a single. The next batter Thomas Kinney hit a ground ball headed for the hold into right field. 2B Alex Cooper ranged to his left and 1B Yelnick to this right. Cooper fielded the ball and fed the alert Causino covering 1B for the out. After the 2nd out, DB catcher Holden Kiefer laced a double to left driving home Jordan to put DB on the board and make it 3-1. SM answered right back in the bottom half of the inning. Leadoff hitter Joe Ross drove LF John Pierce back to the track on a well hit ball for the 1st out. Causino doubled to left. Joe Dattoli singled but Causino was held up at 3B. The pinch runner for Dattoli was picked off 1B. When Jack Gathard walked, Tim Greer was brought into the game in relief for starter Nick Legrand. Greer induced a ground ball to the infield that was misplayed and SM scored. Greer retired the next batter to end the inning. It was now 4-1.
Causino retired the next 6 batters, quickly and efficiently, to end the game. Causino went the distance, surrendering just 3 hits, striking out 4 and the key—no walks! SM’s final numbers were 4 runs (only 2 earned), 8 hits, no errors and 8 LOB. Click here for the game
