Dragons pull away from Potosi; advance to District by Frank Kirchmer

ste genIt was not the start that Ste. Genevieve Head Coach Ken Weik wanted, but
the 6th ranked Dragons (10-1) were able to separate themselves from
stubborn Potosi in the 2nd half for a 35-14 victory over the Trojans in
a Class 3, District 1, Semifinal.

Ste. Gen’s 9th straight win puts them into the Championship game against
#2 seed, 9-2 Park Hills Central, who rallied for a 28-21 triumph over
Kennett in the other Semi. The Dragons beat the Rebels during the
regular season, 40-21.

The Trojans recovered an onside kick on the opening kickoff and
proceeded to go 45 yards in 7 plays, with Kyle Osia booting a 36 yard
field goal for a 3-0 advantage and 8:23 to go in the opening quarter.

Ste. Gen responded late in the quarter with a 35 yard Anthony Roe TD run
that culminated a 12 play, 80 yard drive. Dalton Giesler booted his
first of 5 extra points for a 7-3 lead :13 from the end of the first 12

The inspired Trojans then went 14 plays and 48 yards before settling for
another Osia FG of 29 yards and a 7-6 game with just 4:59 left in the

SG countered following a fumble recovery at their own 29 and traversed
71 yards in just 5 plays with Roe breaking several tackles on a 44 yard
journey to the house 1:50 before halftime. It was 14-6 at the

Austin Brewer, who had 121 yards on 21 carries in the run oriented
Dragons offense, scored from 9 yards away to finish a 10 play, 49 yard
drive with 6:55 to go in the 3rd for a little breathing room at 21-6.
Roe scored his 3rd touchdown from a yard away that wrapped up an 11
play, 52 yard drive, as the 3rd quarter ended for a 28-6 lead. He ended
the night with 149 yards on 18 carries. The Dragons had 44 carries as a
team for 307 yards and only one pass completion. The Trojans finished
with 210 yards of total offense, 150 on the ground.

Jr. QB Wyatt Lalumandier scored the final TD on a 45 yard option run
with 10:44 to go in the game and a 35-6 lead. Potosi tallied on the SG
reserves with exactly 1:00 remaining as QB Jordan Huerta found WR
Tristan Brown from 30 yards out to complete a 9 play, 82 yard drive.
Zach Price ran in the 2 point conversion for the 35-14 final.

In Class 1, Valle Catholic won their 41st straight game over 3 years,
scoring 49 1st quarter points, and beating St. Vincent, 63-7. The
Warriors had two pick 6’s in the game and 4 total interceptions plus 509
yards of total offense, 264 through the air and 245 on the ground,
mostly in the 1st half. The Warriors (11-0) will play undefeated Mark
Twain (11-0) in the District Championship game at Fr. John Dempsey Field
Friday night.
