In or Out by Bob Ryan

in out logoIt’s that time of year…..NCAA brackets….MLB rosters…..NCAAA Coaches…NFL “pruning” time….it’s the time to determine if ur “in” or “out”…take a peek at some
…..Illinois took a quick U-turn on Football Coach Bill Cubit… on Nov 28th, Cubit signed for a 2 year extension…now the new AD, Josh Whitman…in his 1st day on the job and without informing the players…FIRES Cubit….ok…looks like the Illini boosters will pay off Cubit handsomely but Whitman signs Lovie Smith (along with his 2 or 3 sons that he calls “assistants”)…just goes to show….the school isn’t hiring you….the AD is hiring you…hmmm…and Mizzou had a new AD this year also….I’m just wondering….more and more that Pinkel was shoved out….publicly it was softly done….but it was a shove …especially after the protest…. with hush money for 3 years–about $1mil over the 3 years …this is a prime example of being “in” but “out” when people higher than ur rank change.
….the Cards couldn’t have planned it better….Jhonny Peralta was on the borderline of “in” or “out” … would they… or could they… trade him….his injury allows them to play untested Aledmys Diaz at SS…some thought that he’d be “in” by now but performance & work habits slowed his progress and have the brass wondering …so now they get an extended look at him….my guess for this 25 year old  is that he’ll determine if he’s “in” or “out” this season with the Cards  … Diaz may not start season on major league roster due to  Jedd Gyorko and Greg Garcia being able to “man the position”   but he’ll be “in” prior to June 1…it’s too good of an opportunity to determine his long term “in” or “out”for Cards to pass up .. at best.. I think he’s a starter for 2-3 years
…watched the N.Iowa-Evansville game LIVE on Sunday…fun game to watch…but I think Evansville is “out” of the NCAA….Wichita State will be “in” despite their semi loss….I’m writing this on Monday….
….Peyton Manning’s decision to go “out” was absolutely necessary…I mentioned on several occasions in the past year that he had stayed one year too long….but….he DID take home the biggest hardware of them all in the NFL so kudos to him to win it all with limited athletic skills and a brilliant football mind….I won’t be surprised if …in time…he and is family buy an NFL team or buy into a team
…in the NCAA basketball world….I think Coach Anderson at Mizzou will be “in” for another year….WHO could have won many games in the last 2 years with the trash that Frank Haith left behind….selfish players with no discipline on or off the court and guarded defensively about as close as you’d get to a middle-eastern terrorist with a drone flying over head …really…do you think that ANY HS Senior superstar  would want to join this program and walk through that garbage?…..meanwhile…I think Coach Crews at SLU will be “out”….he won’t get fired …he’ll retire
….I hear that Steve Harvey is “in” in LA….he will be announcing the LA Rams draft picks on draft day…that way the Rams can continue their credibility that they established in St. Louis
….no surprise that RGIII is “out”…once he lost his running speed and escapability, his modest accuracy level made him a C- QB….his days as a full-time #1 starting QB are “out”….he’s “in” as a back-up now
….Matt Adams looks about 30 pounds lighter to me….somehow…for some reason…it just doesn’t seem to me  like he fits “in” the long-term Cardinals plans….he’d better be hot immediately and through June to solidify his spot
….back to NCAA….looking only @ some of the bubble teams( if I did them all—I’d be “out” …some of my “in” teams would be—Syracuse (19-10, ACC), Big East-Butler (19-9), American Athletic—Connecticut (20-9),St. Mary’s 23-4, MVC-Wichita State    ….my “outs” would be St. Bonaventure (A-10, 20-7), SEC teams—Alabama (17-11),Florida (17-12), from American Conf-Tulsa (19-10), MVC-Evansville
…..here’s a real shocker….Josh Hamilton is “out” for the season opener…..it’ll never….never… happen but I wish that players on the DL would automatically be paid at the minimum salary for as long as they are on the DL…..I bet the recovery time would shorten ….. but my idea is “out” because the MLB union is “in”
….27 of the 128(that’s almost a ¼) D-1 NCAA Football teams will have new head coaches next year….Clay Helton (new USC) coach has the toughest road to stay “in” long term….he’s a no-name, just fired entire defensive staff and USC is very hungry for a winner and will growl quickly if it doesn’t happen in 2 years.. Meanwhile I think Mark Reicht’s move from George to Miami was a good one and he’s “in” for several years ….because he can recruit….now if he could only get strong coordinators…
…who do the MLB players rate as the best mgr? (as of July 3, 2015)   who’s “in” in their minds…here ya  go.. don’t yell at me….I didn’t do the poll….I’m just passing on the info..Manifesto is one above “who”…a t least Maddon didn’t win or there would be a revolt in St. Louis

…..since the Angels pedaled Austin Jackson….they really don’t have ANY LF that’s “in”….great planning again by the Halos…maybe that Halo should be in the form of a dunce cap ?

…..talk about being “out” but getting “in”….kudos to one of my former C-Football players…Tom England….Tom attended the Bruce Springsteen concert last Sunday…while in the pit, held a sign up asking to play with the band….and….shockingly…The Boss called him up to the stage and let England play along with the band…now that’s like going from the out-house to the pent-house

…after not only being “in” but being the go-to guy, Kobe is now “out”…way out….he languishes on the bench during key minutes of any Laker game (which occur about as often as Ted Drewes runs out of ice cream)…in fact the Lakers are so “out” that they made the headlines with a rare win over Golden State….the story was written like some college team had beaten a pro team….oh…how the mighty have fallen

…thx for staying “in” with me….now I’m clocking “out”

Fun read! I was delighted about Tommy England too. He was such a good kid. Bruce Springsteen must be a decent guy. I would be interested in more prep high school news. Thanks

I checked in to read a good column – now I am out.
Oh wait, which Blues goalie will be in or out of the stretch run and the playoffs?
