I just returned from a delightful week in Florida….. During that time, I had the opportunity to take in some action at Jupiter…some reactions…
….the biggest shock was seeing the tiny figure of Yadier …. He says he lost 50 lbs…looks more like 3 inches and 150 lbs….if he can’t hit at least he could be a jockey with this new “size”,….just wait till u see him….no shoulders, no butt, no body….probably no power, still no speed (does a smaller horse run faster than a larger horse….don’t think so)
…Tommy Pham impressed me….he’s about 6-2, young, versatile….I think Peter Bourjos Wine could be on his way out for money AND skill reasons
….Little ‘ol Pete Kozma plays 3 positions every day…usually not the same three….he scored from 2B on an infield out, bunted effectively (if not safely), played defense…so “How do you do Mr. Daniel Descalso the Second”
….Justin Hayward is really huge…the Cards already have lots of 6-2,6-4 players but Hayward is a real specimen….funny thing, he holds his hands very close to his chin in his stance and it seems to make his swing “long”…but heck…Mabry & Mueller are beaming when he gets into the cage..whatta I know?
…each day the Cards pitched 7 or 8 pitchers….Lyons & Greenwood looked the weakest of the pitchers that I knew of from the past….there are many tom, dick and harry’s who are “passing through”—so to speak…
…..Grizzley Adams looks like he’s ready for a long winter….he’s stored up plenty of food in his belly J
…GianCarlo Stanton towers above all the other Miami players…looks like a man among boys. He swings very effortlessly and the ball jumps off his bat.
….speaking of Miami….I had no idea that the Marlins had “retooled”…..Ichiro, Dee Gordon, Michael Morse, Saltimachioman behind the plate, Martin Prado, Aaron Crow (good 7th inning guy), Mat Latos, Danny Haren…when did we trade him away? 1970? Still looks like a team with 2 guys with pop—Stanton & Morse (his over/under for games injured is 50)…lot of other punch/judi hitters
…each game is SRO at Roger Dean Stadium…..the Cards owners are wizards at how to manufacture different ways to generate income…kudo’s to them
..The feeling at each spring training game is totally different…No one seems to care about the score. Only who’s playing….I had many wonderful discussions with Boston fans …there weren’t any Miami fans there on Sunday…heck, the Marlins are probably playing in front of the size crowd that they’ll see in the regular season (about 7500).
I was thinking about the manner that professional sports teams copy ideas, plays, plans, players … practically everything…from each other…that could be good or bad. Take a look…
…..Seattle makes it to the 7th game of the World Series…takes a 1 run lead into bottom of 9th….then with 2 outs and no one on base…they bring in the 10th man on the pitching staff to try to surprise the opponents…he promptly walks a man then surrenders a HR….the Seattle Seahawks applaud the brilliant move.
…since the NYY now have 23 uniform numbers unavailable…due to the many all-time stars of their history….they decide to let each player wear #2015 (or whatever year it is at the time) and let each player wear a different type of jersey…one of my friends, Stan Miller, knows that I would favor this idea….just think of all the combinations—different colors, stripes, dots, plaid, etc, etc….btw…the Cards are 2nd with 15 retired jerseys….can u name them?
…striving to get into the spotlight…and the record books…the Houston Astros disdain any efforts to “cut down on their swing” since the HR ball is now king in the MLB…as a result…the Astros set an all-time strikeout record this year since Chris Carter, Jason Castro, Evan Gattis, Colby Rasmus, Jonathan Singleton and George Springer each whiff over and over again in strikeouts…Jose Altuve—the contact hitting lead-off man—is expelled from the locker room for too much contact—sounds kind of kinky…sorry.
…with Ohio State winning the National Championship with a 3rd stringer…the U of Kansas puts their 3rd string QB on the field against OU… it goes OK until a player brings in a play and says “hit 123 quick Z”…the QB sprints off the field towards his study hall room of 123 for a quick nap.
…more college Kopy Kats….trying to emulate K-State’s 70+ year old Bill Snyder’s success….ND rehires 91 year old Ara Parseghian only to find that Coach P thinks the spread offense refers to a lunch on the lawn
…since the Rammies cleared plenty of cap space with the departure of Bradford, Jake Long and Wells….owner Stan Kroneke decides that he’ll take that cash directly to invest in his new LA plan.
….since the U of Kentucky starts 5 Frosh each year now…. they roll out another winning model…and win big….the U of Louisville decides that they’ll be twice as good—they bring in 10 frosh…only to find out that this roster can’t win unless they have 5 basketballs on the court at one time (they all need one)…they go 0-25–slightly worse than Mizzou & the SLU Bills this year..but not by much….please remember all those wins over cupcake teams or D2 teams or teams with two directions in their name in December…ya know.. The U of Nowhere-NW of SE Downtown team…etc…
Odds & Ends….
…I think it all came down to money….if Bradford had reworked his contract as the Rams expected him to do….he’d still be here….in the long..and short of it…it’s probably good for both parties to move on
…more Rams stuff….they MUST get 2 FA lineman….draft another lineman and at least 2 promising LB. Maybe…just maybe…2nd round QB from UCLA
…Why do the Blues always sign “veterans” at trading deadline? What makes them think that these old legs can push it hard every other night of the playoff schedule…it’s a young man’s game
…the best kept secret in town is the UMSL-Softball team—now 14-1…#4 in the country…their ace pitcher threw a 15 strikeout, 5 inning (that’s right—every batter struck out), 8-0 victory on Wed (it’s an 8 rule run not 10 run like HS)…only 2 balls were touched as foul balls by the Lake Superior State Lakers…
…if you made it this far…you’ve got too much time on your hands.
