      The Ladue Rams and the Chaminade Red Devils hooked up in a terrific District Championship Game Friday. Two of the top rated teams in the area, each displaying All-Metro players, didn’t disappoint anyone in a very entertaining game that was won by Ladue 61-58 in front of an over-flow crowd at SLUH.       The Red Devils jumped out to an 11-2 lead as Tyler Cook and Grant Hollander led the way in the early part of the quarter. Ladue settled down and Cornell Johnston began to warm up as he scored 5 points late. It was 16-9, Chaminade as the 1st quarter buzzer sounded.


      Chaminade stretched its lead to 20-9 (it’s largest lead of the game) when Cook dunked the ball. It was still a comfortable 25-13 lead as Mike Lewis drained a 3-ball. Ladue had a quick 5-point run as Jon Collins banged home a trey. Ladue gave the Red Devils a taste of what was to come on the final possession of the 1st half. Trailing 31-23 with 40+ seconds, the Rams let Cornell Johnston take over. He dribbled around, darted into the key area and back out to run the clock down under 10 seconds. The final shot at the buzzer was good by Jon Collins and it was 31-25 Red Devils at half.


      The start of the 2nd half was stunning! Ladue ran off 13 consecutive points! Cornell Johnston was on fire- he hit a 3, a FT, a step-back 3-ball, stole the ball to set up Connor Spiritas for a layup during this stretch. It was now 38-31, Ladue. Chaminade rallied for a 5 point run as Damon Patterson banged home a trey and Jayson Tatum jammed home one off the bounce after an explosive move from the top of the key to slice the lead to 38-36. With a bit over 4 minutes left in 3rd quarter, Ladue went to a spread type offense and Cornell Johnston was the engineer.  Now Tatum and Johnston took control of the game. Johnston scored on a nifty OOB play, Tatum tipped in a basket, Johnston hits another step-back 3, Tatum scores on a power move down the lane. With the score 42-40 (Ladue), Jordan Cosby hit a buzzer beating from beyond the arc so the Rams held a 45-40 lead entering the final quarter.


      Jayson Tatum scored on a 12-ft to open the quarter, n0w 45-42. Using the spread offense, the Rams scored. Their next possession, Tatum rebounded the missed shot and went coast-coast with an elegant dunk to wrap up the play. Mike Lewis (Cham) went 1 of 2 at the line on next possession and it was 47-45 still Ladue. Cornell Johnston score the next 5 points of the game on 2 FT and a trey—now 52-45. Red Devils answer with 4 consecutive points-all free throws as Tatum and Damon Patterson go 4 for 4 collectively. Now it was 52-49. Andrew Maddock drove baseline making it 54-49. Patterson’s trey tightened it up to 54-52. Johnston hit both of his FT then Tatum answers with a 3 point play—56-55-Ladue. Cham forced a turnover and Mike Lewis’ bucket gave the lead to the Red Devils 57-56. Andrew Maddock was fouled as he scored on a put-back and completed the old-fashioned 3-pt play as the Rams regained the lead 59-57. The Red Devils hit 1 of 2 FT to cut lead to 59-58. With 10 seconds left, Maddock is fouled. After a Red Devil time out, he hits both FT–now 61-58. Tatum accepted the OOB pass in the back court, was pressured as the clock ticked and the long, desperate 3 point shot was off.
