The Webster Groves Statesmen entered Saturday afternoon’s game at U. City against the Lions with an 0-2 record. It was their first 0-2 start since 2006, when they finished 4-6. In the first two weeks Webster played up a class to take on Class 6 opponents Hazelwood Central and Francis Howell. Not phased at all by the 0-2 start, Webster came out clicking on all cylinders and scored early and often against a young, inexperienced, injury riddled U. City team en route to their 55-6 victory. Nick Delgado got the scoring going for Webster on a three yard touchdown run on the teams first possession of the game. U. City was forced to punt on their next drive and Webster struck again just 2:57 after scoring their first touchdown when running back DJ Johnson ran it in from three yards out, for one of his two touchdowns on the day. He finished with four carries and 18 yards. Webster took a 14-0 lead in to the second quarter, where they got touchdown runs from Johnson, Bri’on Sanders and Rob Thompson. The Statesmen took a 35-0 lead into the locker room at the half.
In the second half, Webster scored two defensive touchdowns on a 42 yard interception return by Cameron Hilton and a 68 yard fumble recovery run back by Julian Ellis. Running back Djakeem Fedrick added a one yard td run for Webster, his first of the season. U. City’s lone touchdown came on a nice run by Freshman quarterback Zack Bush. Bush, was filling in for starting quarterback Michael Jones, who broke his wrist earlier in the week in practice. The Lions were also without one of their leading receivers Ronnell Perkins, who was injured in week one.
Webster Groves (1-2) (1-0) will look to even up their mark Friday night when they take on Seckman (0-3) (0-1), while U. City (0-3) (0-1) will travel to Parkway North (2-1) (1-0) on Saturday afternoon. Both games are Suburban South match ups.
