Not that they needed any more motivation, but the Valle Catholic (Ste.
Genevieve) football team and coaches watched as Monroe City came out of
their locker room before Friday night’s game and did a dance on the
Valle ‘V’ at midfield. This display of disrespect backfired on the
Panthers as the Warriors went on to steamroll their way past the vistors
at Fr. John Dempsey Field, in the Class 1, District 1 Championship Game,
Valle (12-0) scored 28 first quarter points and had a 49-12 halftime
lead over the Panthers (8-4). Monroe City completed its first year as a
Class 1 program following a very successful run in Class 2. The Panthers
won Class 2 State titles in 1994 and ’96. They were second in ’97 and
Jr. QB Connor Basler scored on touchdown runs of 1, 5, and 13 yards in
the first half. He also threw 3 TD passes of 7, 27 and 46 yards. Sr.
WR-RB Koltyn Schilly scored on runs of 12 and 34 yards and caught a 46
yard pass for a TD.
The Warriors had 496 yards of total offense, 313 on the ground. Basler
was 10-17 for 183 yards. Valle held the Monroe City wing-T attack to 174
yards rushing and 238 yards total. The Panthers touchdowns came on a 90
yard kickoff return by Sr. Taylor Birt. a 42 yard Brandon Devlin to
Jonothan Schuck pass, and a 3 yard run from Tariq Gardner.
