Thrilling district championship games highlighted this week… a sampling of some thoughts and notes about these terrific games…
…how about this…Lawson Cardinals (12-2) punch out just one hit during the entire game yet edge St Pius 3-2 in class 3, district 14 play !
…Class 4 action, it came down to one pitch…it was tied, bottom of 7th between McCluer N and Hazelwood West…bases loaded, 2 out, 3-2 pitch….the NorthStars were at the plate. If it was a ball, they would advance, a strike and extra innings ! On a borderline pitch, strike 3 was called. The Wildcats, boosted by escaping the situation, erupted for 4 runs in 8th to gain title. In a suburban north game between the same two teams, 2 days later, McCluer North won 14-4 !
..class 1, district 6 was won by the Miller Cardinals 4-0 over Billings Wildcats. The Cards, who have no seniors, were led by Tyler Abma who struck out 16 batters to lead them to the win.
…most lopsided score was in Class 3,#7 St Dominic Crusadors pulverized the St Charles West Warriors 19-2. Interestingly, the Crusadors won the semis 4-2 over Duchesne !
…in one of the few #1 vs #2 seeded championship games, Scott City Rams (16-5)shut out Chaffee 4-0 in class 2 action. Ryan Modglin threw a 2 hit gem with 10 strikeouts for the Rams.
…Class 4 play heard on www.prepcasts.com, Dave Stewart dominated from the mound. The Vianney Golden Griffins, defending state champion, saw Stewart throw a 4 hitter. Remarkably, Stewart never had 3 balls on any batter until the 7th inning when the Mehlville Panthers threatened with the bases loaded. Stewart struck out the final out of the game.
…in a loaded class 2 district, 4 state ranked teams locked horns. #5 seed Forsythe (18-6) emerged from the championship tilt with Hollistor an 8-1 victor. Some rugged defense in the 5th and 7th innings for Hollister was a key factor.
…Safest team to reach Final four in Class 1 from our crystal ball is the Oran Eagles (23-4). The Eagles traveled to St Louis to compete, and compete well, against successful class 4 teams. This type of play improves the play of these talented smaller schools. Oran beat the Bernie Mules 12-2 to ice up the district title in district 2, class 1.
….phenom Tim Mehlville (Holt) pitched his team to a 4-2 win over the strong hitting Jaguars of Ft Zumwalt West in the championship game of class 4, district 9.
…at Borgia, class 3 district #8, the Herman Bobcats, seeded #7, upset #2 Centralia in opening round, handled N.Calloway in semis 13-6 but finally fell in the finals 8-0 to the host school.
…N Kansas City (#3 seed) owns the biggest upset of the day with their 11-3 thrashing of #1 seed,Ft Osage in class 4, District 15 play. Several unearned runs opened the door for the Hornets.
..in a terrific pitching dual in class 1, Dist #7, Walnut Grove(16-4) out pitched Wheatland (18-8) in a 2-0 game at Wheatland.
…like many champions, Blair Oaks (18-0) had their scare in the semis. The Falcons barely edged Hallsville 7-6 in Class 2, Dist 8 semis. The next day, the Falcons unloaded on a talented Fatima Comet team 8-1. Blair oaks looks to return to final 4 of class 2 in Springfield.
…Oak Park broke open a tight game with Park Hill by having a big 6th inning on the way to their 12-2 win. Oak Park won the class 4, District #16 title.
