High School baseball arrives at its gloriest end with some great plays, players, walk off home runs, 7th inning rallies, excitement reined (and rained) at Springfield MO….
www.prepcasts announced all 14 games this week in the MO State Baseball Championships. All the replays are available on demand! Some thoughts and observations on the games….
…in the Class 2 title game, unbeaten defending champion Blair Oaks Falcons (22-0) saw the scoreboard read 10-8 after Houston Tigers scored 7 runs in the bottom of the 6th ! The Falcons rallied for 5 runs in the 7th on just 3 hits, 3 walks, an error and 4 fielders choices ! Andrew Pointer, Blair Oaks SS, had 4 hits with 3 RBI’s, including the game winning RBI to lead the way.
…In Class 1 semifinal action, the Stoutland Tigers fell behind 5-0 to the Santa Fe Chiefs. The Tigers scored 4 runs in the 5th, 2 more in the 6th to tie the game at 7-7 and scored the game winner in the bottom of the 7th after a walk, single and a fly down the line that was misplayed scored the winning run scored. The next night, the championship game saw the New Haven Shamrocks receive a 2 out single from Craig Schowe that drove in the tying and winning run in the 7th inning. The Shamrocks, who wore their 1st STATE baseball crown, sent the Stoutland Tigers to their 2nd consecutive 2nd place STATE finish with the 5-4 win.
Semifinals in class 3 and 4 on Friday were really terrific !
…in Class 4, #1 ranked Blue Springs and CBC were locked in a pitching dual between Nick Tepesch and Matt Tracy and were tied at 1-1 after 7 innings. The Cadets scored in the top of the 8th on a crucial 2 out hit by John Hasser to take the 2-1 lead. The first two batters were retired when CBC committed an error on a routine ground ball the Wildcats seized on this opportunity. Following a hit, an intentional walk, Eric Silkwood singled home the winning run as Blue Springs walked off the field with a thrilling 3-2 win. The next night, the Wildcats treated retiring manager Brad Mayfield to the STATE TITLE TREAT as they thumped Holt 11-2. For the Wildcats and Mayfield it was the 2nd title.
…. Impressive Tim Mehlville(Holt) breezed through 6 innings with 10 strikeouts and a mere 1 hit then coasted to a 7-2 win over Howell Central. The Spartans dropped three contests to the Indians this season!
…We saw the rare walk-off high school home run in one of the class 3 semis. Monty Cooper unlocked a 3-3 tie with a blast over the boards in the bottom of the 7th for the Sullivan Eagles. Sullivan had overcome a 3 run deficit against the Clinton Cardinals through the 5th & 6th innings.
…Westminster and Benton played two innings on Friday (Benton up 5-0) when the rains deluged the field in Springfield. Returning the next afternoon, WCA put up 4 quick runs but couldn’t hold off the Cardinals offense who won 11-5. The Cardinals shut out the Sullivan Eagles 2-0 in championship play in their 2nd game on Saturday evening.
