Some observations from games of September 9 and 10th
Shocking most observers, the Fox Warriors stand at 2-0 after edging intra district rival Seckman 12-7! Coach Art Mueller has breathed some life into this moribund football program!
Offense you want… how about Pattonville 47-37 victory over Holt. The teams combined for 844 total offense! More fireworks than 4th of July!
While not receiving much pub, Carlos Bisch of St Pius (Festus) put on a show. He scored 5 TD while running 27 times for 316 yards as he led St Pius to come-from-behind rally against DuBourg Cavaliers 35-17.
Clayton Greyhounds (2-0) won easily 38-21 over Borgia OR so it seemed. Borgia fumbled 3 times in first half leading to all 14 Greyhounds 1st half points. In 2nd half, Borgia’s punter was tackled not once but TWICE on the 1 yard line! Those catastrophic miscues handed Clayton 14 easy points (two 1 yard drives!) It was a very good game that can be heard on www.prepcasts.com in its entirety.
Coach Gary Kornfeld has a versatile, talented QB (Paul Cheney) who has demonstrated ability to run, pass and receive. Using his full playbook (reverses, flea flickers, HB pass), SLUH scored with 7 seconds remaining on a QB throwback to Cheney who used his brilliant speed to race down the sideline to edge Althoff 40-35 in a tremendous ballgame.
Cameron Dragons have scored 109 points in 2 games. Against Savannah, QB Drew Newhart threw 6 TD passes as Dragons coasted to second consecutive win 51-7. They are working to return to the Dome again.
In another thriller on the West side of the State, Harrisonville hung on against St Pius (KC) 33-30. This game saw St Pius have a 1st and goal late in the game. After 3 short gains, St Pius went for the win, not the tie, and fumbled on the 1-yard line. Our helmets off to Coach Rick Byers for his decision!
“Bombs away” was the slogan as Blue Springs bested ST Joe Central 63-21. You’d have to choose between the pin point accuracy of Nick Caldrone (Blue Springs) 14 of 17 for 162 yards and 3 TD or the huge numbers of Casey Siela (St Joe Cent) 11 of 29 for 266 yards and 3 TD.
What about those NW House Springs Lions (2-0) of Bob Fisher ? On consecutive weeks they’ve won by 1 point ! Seckman fell 14-13 and Parkway South 7-6 against these rejuvenated Lions.
I’m really looking forward to Class 4 Webb City who will be tangling with the perennially dominant Jays of Jefferson City (class 6) next week. The Cardinals (2-0)lost in the Dome last year but have coasted in first two weeks. The Jays have already displayed that this is one of their best teams in recent years. Outstanding match up!
