Friday night was loaded with games that
were out-right upsets, games that made you sit up and take
notice and many great games with terrific finishes....here we
go..
The Ritenour Huskies (13-6) have been in
the shadows all year. Part of the powerful Suburban North,
Hazelwood Central, McCluer North & McCluer garnish all the
headlines while Ritenour rattles off a very strong season.
Finally seizing the opportunity, the Huskies knocked off McCluer
North 70-64 in conference action. Falling behind by 7 after 1
quarter did not hinder Ritenour as a HUGE 3rd quarter was the
difference. Corey Allen led the scoring with a whopping 28
points.

In December, Chaminade(19-2) beat
CBC(12-9). The story line was all about Bradley Beal's 40+
points. Most missed that Beal had sank a half court shot to send
the game into OT (where he scored double figures). On Friday,
the Cadets returned the favor. Seth Jackson banged home a 3-ball
to tie the game in the waning seconds of regulation. CBC ran off
a 17-3 OT period to win 79-65 to hand the Flyers their first
conference defeat. What impact on these 2 teams in the same
district?

Another team under the radar has been the
Oakville Tigers(15-6). Oakville used a rousing 27 point 4th
quarter to upend the Parkway South Patriots(15-6) 62-52.
Keith Pickens double-double of 18 points-14 rebounds was a major
factory in the Tigers victory. Many may not consider this an
upset since the Tigers do have 15 wins under their belt.
Thoughts on this game

It isn't often that a 3-14 team pulls a
upset at this time of the year. It happened on Friday night !
The U City Lions toppled the Seckman Jaguars (8-9) 86-70.
Corrion Johnson was the leader for the Lions on this night with
his 23 points, 9 assists, 9 rebounds. Is the win or 86 points
more impressive ?

Unbeaten strings on the road aren't very
common. However, the Carthage Lady Tigers(15-5) kept their
string in tact with an impressive win at Republic High School
47-43. Carthage hasn't lost on the road all year! It really
didn't appear that it would go this way. Republic held a 39-31
lead after 3 quarters but a 16-4 final quarter paved the way for
Carthage. A key 3-pointer by Ryann Hartley at the 2:07 mark gave
the Tigers their first lead of the night (one which they never
lost).
Talk about having the game stolen from
you- just ask the Harrisburg Bulldogs (12-4) about it in the
Championship game of the Southern Boone Classic. Seeded #2,
the Bulldogs had the ball with 45 seconds remaining and the
score tied at 48 with the #6 seed, Fulton Hornets. Milking
time and playing for the last shot, the dreams of the
Bulldogs were shattered as Jon Sidney deflected a pass with
8 seconds left, raced after, went up for a shot and was
fouled at the buzzer. With the crowd going wild, no time
left on the clock-- Sidney knocked down his first attempt
and the Fulton fans went into a frenzy. What a finish!
The 20-0 Rock Bridge Bruins had a rough
and tumble game with the Raytown South Cardinals(12-9). The
Cards canned four 3-balls in the first quarter to take an
early lead. Two 9-0 runs in the 2nd quarter turned the tide
and the Bruins rolled 79-65. In a telling stat...Rock Bridge
outshot Raytown South from the FT line-- 22 of 32 as opposed
to 2 of 6 for the visitors in the contest. Is Rock Bridge
the sole favorite ?

Avenging early season losses always taste
sweet to the February victors. Such was the case in
Kirksville. The Kirksville Lady Tigers(9-10) had blown a 12
point lead in their December loss to Moberly. Not this
time....Blair Riley scored 17 points in the 67-51 Kirksville
win. A 15-1 run in the 4th quarter prevented a repeat of
squandering a lead as Kirksville had done in December.
Sometimes in basketball, one or two men
can carry the offense. Such is the case in Charleston this
week as the Bluejays(9-9) staved off a Jackson (9-10)rally
to win 66-57. Donald Dixon and Deonte Jones scored 53
of the 66 Bluejay points (including all but 3 in the first
half) on the way to the win. Any other dyanmic duos?

Congrats to Tyler Holtmeyer crossed the
1000 point plateau for St. Elizabeth in the 71-41 win over
Chamois earlier this week. Do you know of others who passed
this milestone ?
