OK....some things did go as we
talked about last week but there were several "surprises" in all
classifications. Here we go looking some of the key or surprise
games of week 1 of District play.
Class 6-District 4
Last week we indicated passing the
ball effectively would make the difference in this rough and
tumble district. Well...the McCluer North Stars (5-3) threw the
ball an uncharacteristically 20 times and upset the defending
Class 6 Champion, the Hazelwood Central Hawks(7-1) 16-10 and
handed the Hawks their first defeat of the year. Galen
Brown(McN-QB) was 10 of 20 for 157 yards and 2 TD strikes in
this victory that sets this district upside down. Remember,
Hazelwood Central isn't eliminated, the top two teams advance.
The other game of this district saw Riverview Gardens (6-2)
topple Hazelwood West (6-2) 22-6.
Class 6-District 6
After dropping their last 2 games,
the Ft Zumwalt West Jaguars (5-3)scored with only 43 seconds
left to grab the lead and the victory 42-38 over Hickman(3-5) .
Devonte Majors hauled in the 26 yard TD pass from David Washko
for the winner. Leading at one time 21-3, the Jags saw the
Kewpies score 28 straight points in the 2nd half but their own
rally. Washko scored two touchdowns and threw for two more in
the win. Jeff City looms big in this district but this game
probably decided the #2 team of the district.
Class 6-District 7
In the wildest game of the week,
Lee Summit North (3-5) outlasted Joplin (5-3) in a shootout. The
Broncos exploded for 40 points over a 12 minute stretch of 2nd
quarter on the way to 50-33 win! Montereal Robinson led
the Broncos with 259 yards rushing and 4 TD's. Joplin's slick QB
Devin St Clair was 23 of 43 for 346 yards and 3 TD passes in a
game that saw a total of 1030 yards of total offense....WOW !
Class 6-District 8
Blue Springs(7-1) flexed their
muscles and pounded Blue Springs South(4-4) 42-0 to send
messages to the Class 6 teams not to forget about them during
these playoffs. Running back, Darrian Miller leads this highly
talented team. Trailing Rock Bridge until the 15 seconds of the
first half, Liberty Bluejays (7-1) had their ace receiver,
Marcus Lucas throw a double-pass play to put the Bluejays up
21-20 at half. Seizing the momentum, Liberty rolled to a 35-20
win.
Class 5 -District 2
In the best see-saw game of the
night in the STATE, 4 lead changes ended with Chaminade(6-2)
edging Vianney (3-5) 31-27. The star of each team shined
brightly on this night. Dalton Hewitt (Vianney) passed for 268
and 2 TD passes while Rob Standard (Cham) rushed for 310 yards,
3 TD.
Class 5 - District 3
In a district with four very good
teams, Parkway Central Colts (7-1) completely dominated both
sides of the LOS against a stunned Kirkwood team (5-2) and won
easily 28-7. The Colts ran for 319 yards and held the Pioneers
to -1 rushing yards in this surprisingly easy win. Parkway
North (6-1) took a quarter to get untracked as they were behind
3-0 after 1 quarter. The Vikings scored 41 points in the last 3
quarters to ease to a 41-9 victory over Parkway West (4-4)
Class 5-District 10
The William Chrisman Bears trailed
N.Kansas City 21-7 at half. The Bears offense came alive in the
2nd half for 3 TD scores and pulled out a 28-21 win. Premier
running back Caleb Sims piled up 181 yards while QB Zach Dwyer
passed for 201 as the Bear offense rattled off around 400 total
yards in the game. In the other
district game, Ft Osage (8-0) used Steven Snyder's fumble
recovery for a TD late in the first half to help them take
control over Winnetonka and go on to a 27-6 victory.
Class 5-Distict 12
Heartbreak for the KC Central
Indians! Leading the entire game on the strength of two Taylor
Lopez field goals 6-0, Oak Park pushed across the lone touchdown
(with the PAT) of the game with only 1:28 remaining in the game
to take a 7-6 lead. The Indians responded and drove quickly and
efficiently down the field to the 10 yard line but their field
goal attempt sailed wide handing Oak Park (3-5) the win.
Class 4 - District 1
Poplar Bluff (6-2) probably
clinched a spot in STATE with a 34-31 win over Farmington(5-3).
Sikeston (8-0) is heavily favored to win the district but the
top two teams do advance.
Class 4- District 3
In a thrilling game that sent into
OT when Affton scored with 0:50 AND converted the two point
conversion to tie it at 14-14. Seemingly keeping the momentum,
the Cougars scored first but missed the conversion in OT.
Ladue's Charles Badgett went 26 yards for the TD score and Sam
Hurster booted it through the uprights for the winner !
Class 4 - District 6
Maybe biggest upset of the night
saw Westminster sneaking past MICDS (7-1) 14-13. The Wildcats
scored all of their 14 points in the 1st quarter as they were
held to under 130 total yards offensively. Any district loss for
MICDS has been a rare occurrence in recent years. A
rematch could occur in Sectional (2nd) round of STATE
tournament.
Class 4-District 9
Trailing 22-0 at half to St. Clair,
the Pacific Indians saw their season going up in smoke. Long TD
runs of 66 and 53 yards by Blake Arnette brought the Indians
back into the game. Tied at 22, Pacific scored got their last 2
scores from the defense--with 2:33 left, Marco Romano went the
distance (27 yards) with a fumble and with 1:33 Jacob Nutt pick
off a pass for the score and a final of 36-22 Indians.
Class 4 -District 13
Grain Valley's (7-1) potent, quick
strike offense kept rolling with a 49-21 win over
Warrensburg(4-4) . Remarkably, the Eagles led only 28-21 midway
in the 4th when Austin Gouldsmith hit Zac Hoover with an 85 yard
bomb that began the onslaught.
Class 3-District 1
History repeats....Perryville (1-7)
surprised Kennet (3-5) 9-6 again this year ! Last year
Perryville used their win over the Indians to catapult them into
STATE Tournament. Kennet has dropped 3 of their 5 losses by 6
points are fewer. Making it really tough to swallow, the Indians
outgained the Pirates 208-139 and were stopped inside the 5 yard
line and by turnovers in the game.
Class 3-District 4
Miller Career Academy (4-4) had a
deceptive record. Losing to a strong Class 4 teams-Normandy
(7-1), Vashon (4-3) and Gateway (5-3), the Phoenix were
preparing for the long run. Miller Career knocked Cardinal
Ritter (7-1) from the unbeaten ranks with a strong 32-22 win.
Demarco Billups riddled the Lions pass defense for 16 of 21, 347
yards and 4 TD's in the win. Jr. Billups now has 2087 passing
yards for the season !
Class 3-District 6
Bowling Green Bobcats used a stifling
defense to edge St. Francis Borgia 7-3 in an ol' fashioned
defensive battle.
Class 3- District 16
Not since 1921....hard to
imagine...it had been 88 years since the Savannah Savages beat
Chillicothe at home! Savannah (6-2) used a recovery of their own
fumble to save the day. Falling behind the Hornets (6-2)10-0,
Blake Burson recovered a Savannah fumble. The next play saw a
long 37 yard run that set up the first TD for the Savages. With
that big MO behind them now, Savannah scored 27 unanswered
points to win 27-10. The Savages held the Hornets to only 61
yards of offense in the 2nd half.
Class 2- District 2
When Grandview beat Scott City--all
kinds of streaks were snapped. QB Steven Capranica threw a
15 yard TD pass to Robbie Allen with 1:10 left to give the
Eagles a 34-33 lead. A 45 yard FG attempt by the Rams missed and
Grandview had chalked up a victory. The Eagles had some
tremendous offensive performances as they piled up 469 yards of
total offense. The Rams posted 457 yards themselves in this very
entertaining game. Grandview entered the season riding a 35 game
losing streak which ended in the 3rd week of this year. The
district win for the school is the first in at leas 5 years and
the win over Scott City is the first in 18 years. Congrats to
them as they are turning around the program.
