Before we dive into the district waters and submerge ourselves totally in the State Tournament (first rounds are called District), let's consider some the great conference races and teams across the state of Missouri.

In the SEMO North, the Sikeston Bulldogs are 6-0 (2-0) are are currently on top but not by much. Also undeated in conference are the  Farmington Knights 4-2 (1-0) and Poplar Bluff  Mules 4-2 (1-0). Obviously this trio will thrash it out in the next 4 weeks to crown the king of the SEMO North. Farmington vs Sikeston in week 10 could decide district and conference titles.

The Winnetonka Griffins are currently perched atop of the Suburban Big 6 (KC) with a 3-0 (5-1)mark. Next week's game against Park Hill (2-0, 5-1) should determine who will wear this crown. Nevertheless, our congrats to Coach Ken Clemons of Winnetonka. Coach Clemons is in his 5th at the helm of the Griffins, in his first 3 years the Griffins tasted victory only three times total !  Last year, Winnetonka "came on" late and made the playoffs and won a game to finish 7-5. Now, as the conference leader and holding 5 wins in his hand, Coach Clemons deserves a "pat on the back".

In the Suburban Big 7 (KC) the game between Liberty (5-1,4-0) and Blue Springs (5-1, 3-0)in three weeks will decide the league champ. Both should advance through District and could play a rematch in state tourney down the road.

In week 10, the champion of the Missouri River Valley Conference will be decided when the Harrisonville Wildcats (5-1, 3-0) face the Grain Valley Eagles (4-1, 2-0).  It'll be a battle of two high-scoring machines.

The only unbeaten team in the Gateway Athletic South is the Howell Vikings (5-1, 3-0). The Vikes smacked the Jaguars of Ft Zumwalt West  31-8 on Friday to take sole possession of the top spot in conference. Howell North (4-2, 3-1) has only one loss in league and looms on the horizon in district play. Listen to the replay of the Howell win over West.

Speaking of Francis Howell and their district, the DeSmet Spartans (6-0,  4-0) clinched their 3rd consecutive MCC title on Friday with a win over the Chaminade Flyers 59-21. Listen to the replay on www.prepcasts.com DeSmet has Howell (5-1) and Howell North (4-2) in this class 6 district. Only two teams can advance out of district so tie breakers may be in order for District 5 of Class 6 this year.

Quick change of thought...how about this score--Joplin 69 Waynesville 63 in OT last Friday in a football game, not basketball !!

In the South Central Association, the Ava Bears (5-1, 4-0) and the Mtn-View Liberty Eagles (5-1, 3-0) will determine the conference title this weekend prior to district competition.

Despite having several league contests remaining, the Hannibal Pirates (5-1, 3-0) are in good shape. The Pirates have already beaten the #2 team of the conference (Boonville) to give themselves some wiggle room. The Pirates stingy defense has three shutouts in 2009.

The Suburban West of St. Louis County has an unusual twist. The Lindbergh Flyers (6-0,4-0) still have a tough game remaining with the Parkway South Patriots (4-2, 3-1) this weekend. However, the other top contender, the Kirkwood Pioneers(4-1, 4-1) aren't on the Lindbergh schedule ? Lindbergh has already cashed in key wins against Oakville and Lafayette in the conference.

The I-70 Conference is all wrapped up! The Orrick Bearcats (6-0, 6-0) have a game remaining against a sub .500 team this week so they'll, most likely, go into district competition wearing the conference crown.

Another conference championship to be decided this weekend will be the Midland Empire Conference. The Maryville Spoofounds (5-1, 5-0) will lock horns with the Savannah Savages (5-1, 4-0) with the winner to be crowned.

The New Madrid County Central Eagles (4-2, 2-0) are in the drivers seat of the SEMO Central Standings. Owning a win over a rugged Caruthersville Team already (36-7), the two remaining conference games are against .500 or below teams. The Eagles should fly into that conference crown easily.

Also "sitting pretty" are the Ft Osage Indians in the Suburban Mid-6 Conference (KC). The Indians (6-0, 3-0) have only two remaining conference games. Both games are against struggling teams so the Indians can really focus on their tough district that includes Winnetonka and William Chrisman.

It's a different story in the Ozarks Conference. The Rolla Bulldogs (6-0, 5-0) have four conference games remaining. Included in that foursome are two teams with 4-2 records (4-2) Hillcrest Hornets and the (4-1) Camdenton Lakers. Conference and district implications apply in this case !

The MO River Valley Conference East division is really up for grabs. The Higginsville Huskers (6-0, 2-0) have a half game lead over the Lexington Minutemen (6-0, 1-0) and the Carrollton Trojans (5-1, 1-0). All three of these teams will be in District 14 of Class 2 competition. What a showdown !!

The Suburban North conference only has two teams standing with unbeaten league (and season) records. Week 10 will see the Hazelwood Central Hawks (6-0, 3-0) , defending class 6 champions, squaring off against the new kid on the block-- Hazelwood West Wildcats (6-0, 4-0). Both squads will have an tough obstacle to hurdle in the McCluer North Stars in District. Prior to that engagement, the Wildcats have the DeSmet Spartans (6-0) to conclude their non-conference schedule. Listen to that game right here on www.prepcasts.com

Metro East news & notes...

The O'Fallon Panther defense shutdown previously unbeaten and #5 state ranked in 8A, the Belleville East Lancers 17-7. David McDaniel picked off two passes for the Panthers (4-2, 3-1). The lone Lancer TD was a a77 yard kickoff return by Darnell Stevenson.

MIzzou Head Coach, Gary Pinkel spent part of his Friday night at Mascoutah watching two potential recruits. Triad (5-1, 3-0) Senior QB Kristain Moon gained 139 yards on 19 carries with 3 TD in the Knights 28-20 win. Matt Milton (verbal-- University of Tennessee) ended up with 240 yards on just 15 carries and 3 TD scores for the host Indians.

Bethalto football fans are celebrating. Civic Memorial QB Zach Tobin led his team to a 46-37 win over Highland. Tobin, a Junior QB, threw 6 TD passes and scored one himself. The win snapped a 14 game losing streak for the Eagles.

Our next Metro-East game will be on www.prepcasts.com on Friday as Belleville East travels to East St Louis to take on the Flyers in a HUGE game. If you would like to be a sponsor of this game call Ron Block
