It wasn't a typical opening night
in some

respects. The temperature was actually
comfortable, it
was the earliest start ever --
a week prior to Labor Day, many
players
had experienced only a couple, if any,
two-a-days due to
the early starts of many
school districts. Nevertheless, we
were
blessed with a wide variety of exciting

plays and games.
QB Derby
begins...always featured on all levels of football is the
QB. This weekly feature will highlight some of the best
performances from a particular week of QB across the
State. You'll know some of these names from last year but some
will be highlighted for the first time. The tightness of the
game sometimes impacts the selections for this Derby. Here goes
for week 1...
Justin Hinni
(Washington)--rushes 19 times for 158 yards and 2 TD;
passes 9 of 15 for 128 and 2 more TD's. He leads Bluejays past
Ft Zumwalt North 32-10 after a 26-3 halftime lead.
Brendan
Weiler (Ste Genevieve-Soph)--21 of 44 for 244, two scores
in passing game while rushing for 16 times and 80 and two more
TD's as Ste Gen Dragons eased past Dexter 30-25. Weiler replaces
All-State QB Kory Faulker for the Dragons.
Davis Washko
(Ft Zumwalt West)-- account for total yards with
228 rushing and 294 passing (11 of 20) as the Jags crush Howell
Central 64-28. Washko succeeds standout TJ Moe at the QB
slot for FZW. Moe has moved on to MIzzou to continue his career.
Bobby Mahoney
(Fox) - used pin-point accuracy in 10 of 14 performance
as Warriors demonstrated that 08 wasn't a fluke. (see best rally
of week)
Big Timber
Falling...
CBC upset the defending Class 5
Champion, Hazelwood East Spartans 37-27 on their home turf.
CBC's offensive was led by Josiah Stanfield, who crossed the
goal line once each quarter. The Cadets fell behind on the first
play from scrimmage when Hasson Hamilton went 90 yards for the
score for the Spartans. Capitalizing on field position in the
middle of the game and a crunching, methodical rushing game in
the 4th, the Cadets piled up over 200 yards rushing.
Best Rally
of the Week...
Affton Cougars trailed the
Warrenton Warriors 24-7 at the halftime buzzer. Using the
powerful running of Marcus Golden (who scored two 2nd half TD's),
the Cougars shut down the Warriors completely in the 2nd half to
pull out a huge 29-24 win.
Rally
runner-up..
Carl Junction had a big 4th quarter
as QB Matt Thompson led the way. The Bulldogs upended the Lamar
Tigers 31-21. Taking a comfortable 21-7 lead into the final
quarter, Carl Junction saw the lead and the momentum slip away
as Lamar tied it at 21 early in the 4th. Thompson led the
Bulldogs on an 8 play, 74 yard scoring drive to retake the lead
for good.
Too long
for a rally but...
Trailing 24-12 at half to DeSoto,
the Fox Warriors totally dominated the 2nd half as the outscored
the Dragons 34-0 to post a final victorious score of 46-24.
Bobby Mahoney pitched 4 scores and scored 2 himself in this
terrific turn-around.
Some may argue that the defenses
have started catching up to the wide open offensive sets, the
passing games that keep scoreboard operators on their toes
constantly. How about this rock-em-sock-em
game...
Like last year, this game was very
physical, the Lafayette Lancers edged the Eureka Wildcats 14-7.
Kyle Green led the Lancers with 22 carries for 117 yards. The
win avenges the 08 Wildcat victory in this highly charged
intra-district rivalry game.
Run game ? There were some
tremendous individual nights as well as some teams that
preferred to keep it on the ground. How about..
Darrian Miller (Jr
- Blue Springs) - 14 carries for 249; on his 3rd touch,
he exploded for a 52 yard score leading Blue Spring past Lee
Summit West Titans 48-13. Miller dazzled spectators on both
sides of the field with his juke and jive moves, his extreme
quickness and his raw power. On one player, Miller was dragging
5 defenders along as he chugged forward 13 yards for a first
down. "Miller Time" isn't coming as a surprise to anyone on the
West side of the STATE- he rushed for 1500+ yards last year !!
Caleb Sims (Wm
Chrisman)--Christmas arrived early for the Bears...are
maybe Sims arrived early as a transfer student! Sims set school
records as he rambled for 337 yards on 43 carries in a wild
37-30 win over Ruskin. The win snapped a 9 game losing streak
for the Bears and handed 1st year coach, Mark Simcox, his first
win (guess so...it is the 1st game)
Liberty
Bluejays went old-school on Friday. A punishing run game
of the Bluejays rushed for 439 yards (total O was 530) in a
convincing 42-6 victory over the Hickman Kewpies.
Of the 51 running plays, 12 plays
gained 14+ yards! The leading beneficiary of this outstanding
line play was Garrett White who hung up 239 rushing yards.
Known more for its superb athletes of
late, the Rock Bridge Bruins
went to and stayed on the ground all night. The Bruins lugged
the ball 46 times for 263 (167 in 2nd half) as they plowed by
Lee Summit North 22-13. Rock Bridge was 1-9 in each of the
previous 2 seasons, so 1-0 seems great (at least until Monday
when practice begins for week #2)
Pin-ball
scores of the weekend...
Montgomery
County 56 Orchard Farm 45 Dominic Thomas
scored seven touchdowns for Montgomery County in this one !! No
other stats available since all of the game statisticians are
still compiling the info !!
Ft Zumwalt West
64 Howell Central 28 -- The Jags roll up 294
passing and 374 rushing as they had posted 58 by the end of the
3rd !!
A game of inches
usually refers to baseball...not so in Washington, MO
where St. Francis Borgia culminated a celebration of 50 years of
football by stopping St. Clair just a few inches from the tying
the score with only 31 seconds on the clock. The Bulldogs fell
short on the 2-pt attempt and Borgia held onto a 20-18 win. All
of the coaches of the 50 years of Borgia football were honored
in a pre-game ceremony.
Weirdest score
of the weekend- Blair Oaks 12 Moberly 5
Two no-no's
??
yes folks, softball has started also.
Maria Imhoff (Boonville) tossed a perfect 5 inning 11-0 win over
Hannibal this week. A little west, Jackie Bishop struck out 14
on the way to her no-no for Kirksville. The Tigers shut out
Moberly 9-0 in 7 innings.Bishop
was an All-State hurler for the Smifinalist- Kirksville team
last year.
