Check out
these thrilling endings...
These games not only provide teams
with "w's" but set
the table for the future. Teams learn
to win...or find ways to lose in a season in close games. These
teams had thrilling moments that could benefit them "big time"
down the road as they'll use these exciting wins as "builing
blocks".
NO Frosh Fear
here....
At Park Hill, Freshman Neal Sampson
booted through the uprights the winning FG at the 1:30 mark of
4th quarter to give Park Hill a come-from-behind win over
Columbia Hickman 31-28. For this dual sports athlete (plays
soccer also), it was his second FG of the year !
Disdaining a FG for the tie with only 2
seconds from 9 yd line...
Bolivar Liberators kept their record
unmarked (3-0) as Jr QB Kolton Peavey tore a page out of some
NFL books and drove his team 80 yards down the field in the last
two minutes for the game Winner. From the 9 yard line, Peavey
hit Alex Talley with just 2 ticks left to cap the 9 play drive
that led to the 20-17 win over Logan-Rogersville. Peavey, in
only his 3rd Varsity start, was 15 of 24 for 191. Considering he
was 1 of 8 to start the game, one can see how "hot" he was late
in the game.
Two TD's in the last minute....
When Fulton scored to take a 14-12
lead with only 53 seconds remaining, the Hornet fans felt good.
Versailles crushed their hopes by crossing the goal line with
only 7 seconds left to grab a tremendous 18-14 victory
Trailing 10-0 in the middle of the 4th..
St. Marys Dragons rallied for 2 TD
scores, including a 1 yd run by Zach Dorton with only 35 seconds
left to rally and knock off Westminster 14-10
BIGGEST individual
performance of the week in the STATE...
Westran's(3-0) Bryce Enyard rushed for
451 yards, 7 TD's -- HIMSELF -- as Westran piled up total
offense of 602 yards in the 58-41 win over Paris! This wasn't a
basketball score 58-41 !!
Fan's don't over-react,
do they ?
Last week Rockhurst was
soundly beaten by a terrific Hutchison team out of Kansas,
55-27. People, fans, some writers acted like the Hawklets had
gone 0-10 for a decade. Dispelling the myth, Rockhurst rebounded
to defeat Blue Springs 17-3. Now I read about how "embarrassing"
it is for the Wildcats. Come on...when two good teams play
someone has to lose and sometimes the momentum of the game never
leaves one sideline for one reason or the other. The Hawklets
rushed the ball very, very well throughout the game. The
Wildcats just couldn't stop the run--it wasn't effort !
Embarrassing to me would come in some of the following
ways--completely quitting on effort and surrendering long runs -
one after the other, mocking the officials, responding in foul
or inappropriate ways to coaches and other players. These two
great programs don't tolerate those characteristics. Blue
Springs isn't done for the season. It's great to love your
team and school but ....Calm down fans--these kids are giving it
their best effort, which doesn't always translate into their
best execution.
Keep these TEAMS on
your radar in 2009..
Hazelwood Central (3-0, class 6)
handed their intra-district rival and defending Class 5
champion, Hazelwood East their 3rd straight loss in convincing
style 28-7. These Class 6 champions, like all teams, have a long
way to go in the season but are already flexing their muscles.
Central takes on Suburban North foe, Ritenour Huskies, this
week.
Defending Class 2 Champion, Clark
County Indians are 3-0 while outscoring opponents 99-6 in these
3 games ! Clark County takes on Palmyra this weekend.
Accustom to post season play for a
long time, the Valle Catholic Warriors (class 1, 3-0) have an
offensive juggernaut that has piled up 148 points during the
first 3 games.
08 State Quarterfinalist, Centralia
Panthers have scored, scored and scored some more (143 total
points) in their first 3 wins of the year. Centralia faces
Highland in a Clarence Cannon Conference game this week.
A new school has already hatched a
powerful football program. The Staley Falcons are led by highly
successful coach Fred Bouchard and are 3-0 for 2009
Jefferson City seems to have returned
to the glory years. The 3-0 Jays beat Fayetteville 20-18 in
Arkansas this weekend. Interestingly, the Jays will play
Rockhurst TWICE this year in non-league games !! It's a home &
away series on September 25 and October 9th !
Cass-Midway (class 1) raised its mark
to 3-0 with a 45-8 victory over Rich Hill. West Platte is up
next for the Vikings.
Fair Grove (3-0, class 2) rolled past
E. Newton 34-12 and now have outscored opponents 113-18 in the
2009 games.
Defending Class 1 Champions, Orrick
Bearcats seemed poised for a post season berth again as they've
jumped out of the chutes 3-0 while handling their opponents
112-15 in the first 3 games of 09.
Liberty Bluejays (class 6, 3-0) have
rumbled easy past their first three foes. In a district with
Blue Springs, Blue Springs South and Rock Bridge, the Bluejays
can't be overlooked.
3 weeks into it....TURNAROUND SEASONS...
Last year, Cameron Dragons were 1-9,
flying out of the shoot with a 3-0 mark including an impressive
win over the Lawson Cardinals 14-6
Southern Boone went
winless in 08 but are currently sporting a 3-0 mark after
beating Cuba 56-16 on Friday. Eagles crunched out 502 total
yards.
Ft Zumwalt East suffered through a
1-9, 2008 season. With their big 23-19 win over Washington, the
Lions now own a 3-0 mark with Ladue on tap.

Only one team drinks
from this Cup....
For the 12th straight
year, N. Calloway (3-0) won for the Calloway Cup(and bragging
rights in Calloway County) as they upended S. Calloway 35-0.
Final score doesn't reflect the tenor of the game as the
Thunderbirds stopped the Bulldog offense on three different
occasions inside the 10 yard line in the first half. In the 2nd
half, the Thunderbird offense came alive and rolled to the win.
METRO-EAST NOTES...
Collinsville football fans are celebrating a big 32-28 victory
over Belleville West. It looked bleak for the Kahoks who
trailed 28-18 late in the 4th quarter with the Maroons on the
Collinsville one yard line. However, a penalty and a missed
field goal opened the door. QB Austin Hails led the Cahoks on a
five play 80 yard touchown drive. West then fumbled the ball on
their next possession at their own 42. Hails hit Chris Tidwell
on a 14 yard TD pass on the final play of the game. Hails
finished with 424 passing yards and was 32 of 57 throws with
four touchdowns and five picks. The last time Collinsville
defeated Belleville West was 1998 (29-28).
Belleville East spotted Edwardsville an early touchdown,
then rallied for a 27-7 victory at home over the Tigers.
Darnell Stevenson had 141 yards on only eight carries,
including a 32 yard TD run. Listen to the replay on Prepcasts--
