The calendar turns a page but
many teams keep right on clicking through the 09-10 season.
Here are some more teams off to outstanding starts to the 09-10
season.
One of the traditional powerhouse
programs of Southeast Missouri has a new man at the helm, Kenyon
Wright now holds the reins for the high flying Scott County
Central Braves. SCC (10-1) again raced through the Southeast
Missouri Christmas Tournament and won the Championship 75-47
over Cape Central (7-3). 6th seeded, Central had become the
darlings of the tournament by upsetting #3 Jackson and #2 Notre
Dame in the first two rounds. SCC quickly established itself by
scoring 19 of the first 21 points of the game ! Led by D-1
recruits, Bobby Hatchett and Otto Porter, the Braves offense (as
always- it seems) is extremely potent. Hatchett had 22 while
Porter dropped in 18. This pair thrilled the crowd with a couple
alley-oop throw down dunks during the route. Expect this team to
play their final games at Columbia, MO at season end.
The Macon Tigers (7-1) outlasted
the Moberly Spartans 71-67 in a wild contest at Moberly. Macon
jumped out to a 19-9 first quarter lead but needed key free
throws by Josh Bailey and Tucker Oliver to hold on to this
precious win. Cody Tate led the scoring for the Tigers as he
hung up 19 points.
How about the job of the new
Collinsville coach-Darin Lee ? Last year the Kahoks were
6-22 in the always tough Southwest Conference in the Metro East.
Already 7-5, Coach Lee has fans thinking about the "good ol'
glory days" under coach Virgil Fletcher. Collinsville is led by
Daryn Foster at 16.5 ppg and Rob Fernandez (inside man) at 12.5
and 9 rebounds per game. Maybe not a state championship
contender, this program looks like its headed towards brighter
days.
27 years ! It took 27 years
for the Kennett Indians (8-3) to win the Bloomfield Christmas
Tournament (1982, now 2009) The Tribe handed the Bernie Mules
their first defeat in a 67-47 rout. Kennett Coach Jim
Vaughan's aggressive forced Bernie into 17 turnovers and a
dismal 1 of 15 from beyond the arc.
The Mid-Buchanon Dragons (7-0)
are lighting it up. The Dragons pounded St. Marys 85-42 earlier
this week in the Bishop LeBlond Tournament. Hunter White led the
scoring parade with 26 while Brett Pierce netted 17 for the
undefeated Dragons.
After a big year last year, many
expected a drop-off at Oakville High School this year. Not so,
Coach Nick Traxler's 9-3 record is the best at the moment in the
Suburban West. Garrett Reeg's 20.8 average is leading the
Tigers.
How about the parity of the
Suburban East ? Clayton is 8-4, Ladue 6-3, Jennings 5-3,
Normandy 6-4 and Wellston 6-5 in this 7 team league. On Friday
night, Prepcasts will have the Clayton-Jennings game LIVE to see
which team wins their league opener. Don't miss it...
For more good teams.....
In
Girls Basketball.....
Notre Dame (Cape)
(8-1) routed Jackson 50-23 to win the Ste Francis Medical Center
Holiday Tournament.. Coach Renee Peters breeze through the
entire tourney as they won the other two games by 60-25 and
57-32 scores. Sr 6-1 center, Jane Morrill (Ark State signee)
provides a strong inside force for this team that has "lived"
off of their defense.
Mount Vernon
Mountaneers (9-1) toppled West Plains(9-3) 49-29 in the
Championship of ther Pink and White Tournament. Amelia Bramer
scored 15 points for the winners who are off to a rousing start
to the 09-10 season.
Quietly rolling
along at 10-1, the Ft Zumwalt South Bulldogs have been in the
shadow of the fellow conference, district school-Ft Zumwalt West
this year. Their only loss was to Eureka (9-0)! Jr. Julie Hlinak
leads the way offensively with 18.8ppg. The big South-West
battle will be January 15th.
Anne Hartung,
with her 18.9 average and 9.9 reb/game has Bowling Green at a
5-2 record after key wins over Timberland and Orchard Farm.
These wins over much larger schools seem to indicate a great
year in the making Lady Cats.
St Joe-Benton
(10-0) rallied from an 8 point halftime deficit to hand the Rock
Bridge Bruins(8-2) a 41-33 defeat in the Championship game of
the Unilever Lady Jays Holiday Classic. It took until 6:10
remaining in the game when two free throws by Kerstyn Bolton
gave Benton a 29-28 lead for the Lady Cardinals to have their
first lead of the contest. They would never relinquish the lead.
Breonna Embray scored 13 points in this contest between two of
the best teams in Missouri.
Let's not
overlook the defending State Champion- Cardinal Ritter who's
unbeaten at 9-0. Hazaria Washington, who dropped in the winning
bucket in the title game, is back with Tiera Baker and Brianna
McCollough to lead the Lions. No longer the "underdog", the
Lions will face the best of each opponent who'd love to upset
the defending state champ.
Don't forget to
stop by CBC High school this Saturday for the Prepcasts Elite
Girls Shootout II. Our four game schedule has some of the very
best teams in Missouri and the ST. Louis area.
Curtain raiser is
Hermann vs Farmington, followed by Ft Zumwalt West vs Lafayette,

tangles with Webb City. Check our schedule on the tab above. If
