The #1 team in the State traveled a
long way from their home in St. Louis this week to travel to
Joplin for the Kaminsky Classic. Winning for the 5th consecutive
year (that's usually not a good way to stay in a tournament !),
WG converted 9 of 11 free throws in the final quarter to hold
off the Joplin Eagles 63-57 in the Championship game. Joplin
trailed 56-43 with 5 minutes remaining so the Statesman had to
fight off a gallant rally by the Eagles. Derrick Dilworth and
Cortez Connor (both All-Tourney selections) led the scoring for
Webster Groves.
Still unbeaten at 10-0 but laying
low the last couple weeks, the Borgia Knights played their first
game since Dec 21 on Monday as they smashed Hermann 64-28. Led
by the highly successful, veteran Coach Dave Neier, the Knights
offensive leader is Nathan Scheer with his 23.7 ppg. Borgia does
own wins over Chaminade and CBC (see below).
Also unblemished at 7-0 in Class 1
is the perennially tough, Thomas Jefferson Cavaliers. The Cavs
waxed College Heights 70-32 this week as their inside game was
just too much. Post players, Jordan Stauffer (25 points, 19
rebounds, 5 steals) and Alex Oserowski (20 points, 14 rebounds
and 3 assists) dominated this game.
Two familiar foes tangled this
week. Both in the MCC, Chaminade (11-2) and CBC (11-4) annually
face each other two or three times a year. Chaminade, led by
Bradley Beal, has been on a string of wins in the recent series.
Not so on Friday as the Cadets tumbled the Red Devils 69-63 at
Chaminade in front of a packed house. CBC utilized their usual
attack centered around four players (Ryan Pierson, Seth Jackson,
Cory McCarthy, Darion Rackley) to lead their balanced attack.
All four average double figures. Continuing their win streak to
5 games, the Cadets traveled to Highland on Saturday and edged
Robinson (Chicago) 64-63. Meanwhile...only round 1 is over in
this year's battle between CB & Chaminade. Prepcasts will
have round 2 on February 5th on
www.prepcasts.com !! Stay
tuned !!
In the GAC North, the Washington
Bluejays (7-3) opened conference play this week with an easy
68-36 win over Warrenton. SKyler Suggs (20 points, 17 boards)
led the way. Holding on to the best overall record in the GAC
North, the Bluejays look poised for another serious run for the
title.
Another team that's been under the
radar has been the MICDS Rams. MICDS' season began slowly as the
Rams lost two of their first 3 games and then fell to .550 with
after 6 games. Since then, MICDS has run off a winning streak of
5 games to elevate their record to 8-3 including a 54-41 victory
over Principia on Saturday. The seasoned play of McPherson
Moore(19.7), Michael Scott (15.7) and Thomas Militello (10-4) is
the main engine of this offensive machine.
Meanwhile the Tina-Avalon Dragons
raised season mark to 8-1 with a 72-15 win over Maysville this
week.
Plenty of excitement on Saturday
in the Prepcasts Elite Girls Shootout II. In the first game, the
highest scorer in the St. Louis Metropolitan area, Shelby
Winkelmann, again put on a show. She led the Hermann Bearcats to
a 72-56 win over Farmington. Winklemann dropped in 31 (just a
tad over her average-- she scored 28 ppg last year as a
sophomore) to help keen Hermann unbeaten. The Bearcats knocked
off two traditionally very strong programs this week in St.
James and Farmington.
In the 2nd game, the Ft
Zumwalt West Jaguars raised their record to 11-1 with a 59-54
win over Lafayette. The Jags seemingly had it wrapped up with a
double digit lead and only 4 minutes left but the Lancers kept
plugging away and slicing into the lead to provide an exciting
finish.
ESPN'S #5 team in the country,
the Incarnate Word Academy Red Knights (13-0)stymied the Althoff
Crusaders (11-5) offense all night long in a 54-44 win. Not
always pretty but always effective at hounding, harassing the
ball, the Red Knights seldom permit a real good look at the
basket. Jazmin Hitchens was the high scorer of the game with 21
points.
Coming in at #18 in the ESPN Poll
after winning the prestigious Naples Daily tournament in
Florida, the St. Joseph Angels fell behind immediately to the
trapping, run & jumping, red hot shooting Webb City Cardinals.
The Cards were caught in the 2nd quarter by the Angels and the
score stayed very close until mid 4th quarter when Webb City had
another surge. When the buzzer sounded, Webb City held a 58-51
win. Coach Brad Shorter had his Lady Cardinals moving off the
ball beautifully, penetrating to drive or kick out. Kyndal
Clark scored 17 points to lead the Cardinals. Meanwhile, Sydney
Stipanovich led the Angels with 16 points, 7 blocks and 12
rebounds. Yes...she's the niece of former DeSmet, Mizzou, NBA
star- Steve Stipanovich.
Outside of the Shootout, St.
Clair Bulldogs have won 6 straight to raise their season mark to
11-1 with a 58-45 win over Northwest. Bry Pierce led the Lady
Bulldogs with 22 points in the victory. St Clair and Pacific are
the leaders in the Four Rivers at this point of the season.
