Ranked #1 in Southwest Region by ESPN, the Incarnate Word
Academy Red Knights (17-1) soundly handled a strong Notre Dame
(Cape) team this past week 58-27. The Red Knights came out
firing as they drilled in five treys in the opening quarter to
open up a 23-8 that was never challenged. IWA's only loss was to
nationally ranked Whitney Young on ML King Day. Prepcasts will
be covering the annual slugfest between IWA and St Joe (14-5)
this Friday night LIVE on
www.prepcasts.com.
A really strong team doesn't fold if the opponent comes
out smoking. Nixa (15-1) fell behind the Kickapoo Chiefs (10-8)
by a quick 10-2 margin. The Eagles went on an 17-0 sprint of
their own to snatch the lead, the momentum, and ultimately a
72-60 victory. Nixa scored on seven straight possessions while
holding the Chiefs off of the scoreboard as they turned this
game around. Watch for the Eagles to go deep into post-season
play !!
A very touching moment occurred on Jan 26. The game
scheduled between College Heights Christian School and McAuley
Catholic was to feature Father-Son as head coaches. It would
have been the first battle between this father-son as they sat
on opposites sides of the bench. Long time CHC Coach Charlie
Williams was to face his son, Chuck Williams. Chuck had played
for and coached with his Dad during his younger days. Both told
all their friends and community about the game! Sadly, on Dec
15, Charlie Williams died of a heart attack. It sure makes it
clear that often winning or losing games pales by comparison to
some of the real lessons of life.
King City (10-1) tasted a rare treat recently. The Wildkats upended
Jefferson(10-2) handing Jefferson it's first loss to a Class 1
team in regular season since the 2003-04 season! On Feb 27,
2004 King City beat Jefferson and a week later beat them again.
Jefferson won three consecutive STATE titles 2006-07-08 with 21
consecutive post season wins! With this win, King City (#9,
class 1) halted the Jefferson five year run as the Stanberry
Tournament Champions and has high hopes for a long post season
run.
The St Francis Borgia Lady Knights (12-2) toppled the state-ranked
Hermann Bearcats 56-54 when Maggie Vossbrink hit a buzzer beater
to win the game! Earlier this month, Vossbrink had broken the
1000 point barrier in a win against Wellston at Borgia.
Meanwhile, the leading scorer of the St. Louis Metropolitan
Area-Shelby Winkelmann (Hermann) was "held" to 25 points in the
Borgia loss. Hermann had suffered their first defeat of the year
only 3 days earlier in a 50-45 loss to Harrisburg in the
Championship game of the S Calloway Tournament.
For a long time, St. Louis basketball fans looked to the Public
High League for the best teams of the State. In recent years,
the prestige has dwindled. Still providing several outstanding
players and teams, the PHL is now being led by the Beaumont
Bluejackets (11-3, 6-0). Sean Jones pops in 17 ppg to lead this
talented team. Other top teams of the PHL are Soldan (13-4, 5-0)
with Brier West as the leading scorer and Miller Career Academy
(11-5, 5-1) rounding out the top tier of teams.
The MCC has become a two-horse race. Perched at the top are the CBC
Cadets (15-6, 5-0) while the defending Class 5 Champion,
Chaminade (13-5,5-1) anxiously awaits the rematch on Feb 5.

The Washington Bluejays (11-3, 3-0 ) are still leading the pack in
the Gateway Athletic Conference-North. Coach Greg Dunigan has a
balanced attack with Skyler Suggs as one of the key offensive
components. A recent win over Timberland displayed the varied
attack that the Bluejays possess.
In the GAC-South Boys Division, the Troy Trojans (13-4, 3-0) have
key conference games on the horizon as Ft Z West and Ft Z South
are both waiting for their crack at the Trojans in the next
couple weeks. Cullen Devis, Neal Branham and Allen McKinney are
all averaging in double figures for Troy.
In Jefferson County, Festus had a red hot 3rd quarter as
Logan Bone knocked down several treys and broke open a tight
game at home against Windsor to move into first place. The
Tigers (10-5,4-0) are led by Cody Roberts' glossy 20 ppg
average. This conference is tightly bunched so keep your eyes on
it.
Three teams have almost identical records as we head into our final
5 weeks of the South Central Athletic Association. Hancock
(9-5,3-0), Maplewood (9-6,3-0) and Brentwood (9-5,3-1) are going
to settle things with several more league games. Maplewood's
non-league games include powerhouses-Scott County Central,
Clayton and Hazelwood Central, as they toughen themselves for
post-season play.
