Mother Nature provided us with four brilliant days for baseball as we gathered at Meador Park in Springfield, MO to watch four new champions being crowned in Baseball.

CLASS 4

In this game, CBC looked to break a hex. In their first five trips to the Final Four of Baseball, CBC had lost each semifinal game! CBC used an early 3-run HR blast from MIchael Ehrhard in the first inning to jump on Rockhurst. The Cadets blasted five doubles and two round trippers (Parker Stewart hit a solo) while David Schmidt pitched his 2nd consecutive complete game win as the Cadets beat the Hawklets 9-2 in the Semifinals.  Two complete games doesn't seem like much until you consider that Schmidt, who had battled arm issues early in the year, had only thrown 20+ innings for the YEAR prior to these complete game efforts ! Schmidt finished his Junior year 4-0 with a sizzling 1.22 ERA.

In the other semifinal, Tyler Burgess did it all for Webb City in the Cardinal victory over Oakville 7-2. He scattered 6 hits and allowed two runs on the mound. At the plate he was 4 for 4 with 2 doubles and an RBI !! Key Cardinal hits came from Patrick Drake (2 for 4 with a double) and catcher Nathan Ervin who banged out 3 hits. Oakville held a tight 2-0 lead after 5 innings. Webb City scored two runs in the 6th but one could feel the momentum building on the Cardinal side of the field. A 7th inning of walks, hits, errors led to a 5 run burst and Webb City let Burgess finish it out for the 7-2 win.

In the Championship game, CBC had a 2-0 lead through the first 3 1/2 innings. Webb City, as they often do, scored in bunches. In the bottom of 4th the Cardinals took the lead 3-2. Manager Mason Horn knowing all about the Cardinals scoring tendency, made a pitching change as he went to Derek Mazzio to change the momentum and end the inning. This was the first time that CBC had ever trailed in the STATE tournament. The Cadets answered with 4 runs in their next at-bat. Parker Stewart's two run triple was a key blow. A Webb City run in the 6th cut the lead to 6-4 so fans on both sides were still excited as the 7th inning opened up.  GJ Strauss, was reentered to bat which removed Mazzio, opened with a ringing double down the line. This began an inning that saw 12 Cadet batters.  Nick Scarfino had a single that drove home 2 runs, Derek Rallo's double also sent home two more and Strauss, in his 2nd AB of the inning blasted his 8th dinger of the year to conclude the 8 run inning. CBC won 14-4 in a score that in no way reflects the tightness of this game. Webb City struggled defensively with 6 errors, coupled with the CBC 14 hits, there were all kinds of runners. CBC finished with 34 home runs for the year and win their first Baseball Championship in the long history of the school.

CLASS 3

The wildest game of the class 3-4 two day series was the Semifinal between Bishop DuBourg and Logan-Rogersville. DuBourg raced out to a 10-2 in the first 3 1/2 innings. And...I do mean RACE ! The Cavaliers, led by Jimmy Schwent who knocked around four hits, stole 5 bases. A huge 7 run, top of the 4th had contributions from Nick Montero (3 of 4, 2 runs, 2 ribbies), Jeremy Tyler (3 of 4, 2 runs) and seemed like it wrapped up things for the Cavs who led 10-2 at that point. Oh NO ! The Wildcats didn't concede a thing. Logan-Rogersville outscored DB 9-2 in the second half of the game but dropped a 12-11 thriller. The Wildcats had plenty of hitting stars themselves. Zach Herman (3 for 3, 2 runs, 2 stolen bases), Seth Conner (2 for 3) and Travis Schlesener (2 for 4). Both starting pitches, usually the aces in thrown in the semis, were bounced around by these potent offenses.

The other semifinal belonged to Dane Gronewald of Winfield, The lanky, talented southpaw, Gronewald twirled a two hitter as the Warriors toppled Pembroke Hill 3-0. Eight different players had base hits for the Warriors as they scored two quick runs in the 1st on hits by Jon Brown and Dylan Terrell and another in the 2nd inning. Then the Warriors rode the magnificent pitching of Gronewald into the Championship game.

Class 3 Championship Game saw each team (Winfield vs DuBourg) score three runs in the 2nd inning. Winfield's Dane Gronewald blasted a long home run to right to account for a couple Warrior runs. DuBourg plated two runs in the 4th and 5th innings to take a 7-3 lead. Banging out 14 hits for the second consecutive day, the Cavaliers' Matt Linderer went four for four including a key double. Mikey Cibulski, Jeremy Tyler, Justin Ward, and Tim Althage each had a pair of hits. Winfield rallied late. The Warriors matched a Cavalier run in the 6th inning and threatened in the 7th. Dalton Entwistle had two hits while Chris Watson smacked a solid double. The win came as Matt Linderer came into the game in the 7th inning. Josh Wagemann had worked a crafty  6+ innings  as he mixed and matched with breaking balls in all parts of the strike zone. The heat took its toll (and one could almost feel the momentum starting to change) so Linderer took care of the final out with a strikeout and DuBourg had won its first Baseball title 8-5.

Class 2

Crystal City had knocked off some terrific teams to reach Springfield. Winning district 1-0 over Valle Catholic with two doubles in the 7th, the Hornets had to go 8 innings to edge Scott City 2-0 in the Sectional round game. Gary Doyle went the distance. Crystal was actually outhit 5-3 in this extra inning thriller. In the Quarterfinals, the Hornets toppled previously unbeaten Clearwater 4-3 when they scored the winning run in the 7th inning ! These thrillers continued as Crystal topped Stockton 6-5 in the semifinals. Alex Winkelmann was able to throttle the rally of the 6th & 7th to send the Hornets against Carrollton.  In addition, Winkelmann was on base four times with 3 hits and a walk. Crystal  had played enough nail-biters for one season. The Hornets busted this one open early with 9 runs in the first two innings and coasted to 10-1 title. Nathan Kaminski (red hot throughout the STATE tournament) had two hits, two runs, two RBI's. Other hitting stars for the Hornets were Logan Jett, Nick Portell (HR in title game) and Daniel Rothweiler. It was the 3rd state title for the Hornets with the last one coming in the year 2000.

Class 1

Concordia had to knock off the three-time defending district champion-Santa Fe 2-1 in the District Title game. Once the Orioles had achieved that goal, things seemed easier. It was all Concordia (19-3) in the  Wed-Thur class 1 games. The Orioles came on strong to defeat St. Elizabeth 9-3 in the Semifinals. Tied at 3 runs a piece, the Orioles had a 4 run 5th inning to break it open. Keeping the momentum, Concordia scored four first inning runs on route to a 6-1 win over Brashear to earn their first state championship. Hayden Brown's two-run double was the key hit of the inning. Alic Frerking (4 innings) and Carter Brown (3 innings) split the game on the mound. Brown finished with a flurry as he struck out the side in the 7th inning.
