Week 1 of post season quickly blends
into a loaded schedule of games for week 2 in MSHSAA Football
post-season play. In case you're wondering, the defending
champions of all the classes are still alive and kicking. I
might say, kicking their opponents rather handily. Combined
these six defending champions have an overall record of 63-2 in
2010 - WOW !
From Class 1, the defending 2009 Champions are the Penney Hornets
(11-0). The Hornets, now in Class 2, cruised to Regional round victory to extend
their unblemished season. The Hornets are 11-0 and have scored
552 points in 2010 (that's 50+ ppg !!). Penny takes on the
Lexington Minutemen (7-4) tonight. Penny's closest win was 24-7
over the Lawson Cardinals in regional round last Wednesday.
Class 2's defending champions, the Maryville Spoofhounds are 9-2
in 2010. Maryville took care of Odessa 49-6 in the Regional game
but on deck are the Richmond Spartans (11-0).
In Class 3, some things just keep rolling right along. Cassville
the two-time defending Champions have put up an 11-0 mark in
2010. Beating Bowling Green in 2009 and Cardinal Ritter in 2008,
the Wildcats are again using their stingy defense. In nine games
this year, the opponent has scored 1 touchdown OR LESS ! The
high scoring Holden Eagles (7-4) are up next for the Wildcats.
By the way, Richmond and Holden are both from the MRVC - East
Conference!
The Kearney Bulldogs own the Class 4 title at this moment and
they appear to be willing (AND ABLE) to put up a fight to keep
it. With their 11-0 record, the Bulldogs travel to Platte County
(8-3) for a rematch of a September 3 game won by Kearney 38-0.
Both these teams compete in the Suburban Blue Conference of KC.
The Webster Groves Statesman (10-0) travel to Summit to face the
Falcons tonight. WG beat Summit earlier this year 48-14. This
game will be on www.prepcasts.com Webster' s last loss was to
Chaminade in 2008. Last year the Statesmen beat Ft Osage 31-14
for the Class 5 title at the Dome.
The defending class 6 champs, the Hazelwood Central Hawks (11-0)
squeaked by early in the year with some tight wins but appear to
be rolling now. The Hawks first five games were won by 7 points
or less! In Week 1, HC beat DeSmet 20-19, Pattonville 14-7 in
week 2. Week 3 saw the Hawks edge Rock Bridge 23-20, Kirkwood
fell in week four by a 45-38 margin. Hazelwood East lost in week
5 to the Hawks 21-14. Somehow, (lets see, might it be...like
good coaching and good players) this team has found a way to
win. This Saturday, the Hawks face CBC on www.Prepcasts.com for
a 1:30pm game.
There was plenty of excitement this week around the STATE. Goal
line stands, a rarity these days, won the game for two teams.
The Kirkwood Pioneers (7-3) raced out to a quick 19-0 as they
scored on their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th possessions of the game
against the Holt Indians (6-5) in Class 5 action. Holt fought
back and stiffened on defense. The Indians drove late in the 4th
quarter with the score 19-14 Kirkwood. After a sharp run by
Terrence Tate to the 8 yard line, it was first and goal with
4:00 on clock. Two runs took it to the ½ yard line. A plunge up
the middle was stopped for no game and an option was thrown for
a 3 yard loss. The Pioneers gained 36 yards on their first 2
plays after that stop, got themselves into mid-field, punted and
held defensively. Kirkwood has an awesome defense. This goal
line stand wasn't surprising!
7th ranked Logan Rogersville (9-2) was on the ropes against the
Mt Vernon Mountaineers (5-6) in a Class 3 regional game. With
only 13 seconds remaining, the Mountaineers were knocking on the
door from less than 1 yard out! Shane Williams (Mt Vernon) was
stopped in his tracks by Rogersville's Travis McMillion for no
gain and the win! The Wildcats defense completely throttled the
Mountaineers in the first half as they held the Mountaineers to
no gain (or less) in 12 of the 25 plays. Much to their credit,
Mt Vernon came back and fell just inches short of a major upset!
he game of the night may have been the OT thriller won by Osage (8-3) 21-14 over the Boonville Pirates (8-3) in Class 3. Boonville, led by their super running back Kellen Kempf (1984 rushing yards in 2010 regular season and 217 in this game) were forced due to a late injury to move Kempf to a passer. The Pirates had their starting QB injured on the 3rd down so with 4th & 9 from the 14 in OT, Boonville had Kempf take a toss and tried a HB pass that fell incomplete. Osage won their first post-season game since the 80's!
Will the streak end for
Centralia ? For the fifth consecutive season, the Panthers have
finished their regular season with a perfect record but have yet
to taste the sweet taste of state title waters. Centralia faces
Macon who they beat in a tight 26-23 win on October 28. Last
year, the Panthers fell to Brentwood deep in the State
tournament.
Want a "big time"rally? How about Hillcrest (7-4)? The Hornets
trailed St. Clair (7-4) 21-zip after 1 quarter! At this point,
the Hornets got their passing game into high gear. QB Matt
Futrell passed for 236 yards and four TD strikes and his
favorite target Dorial Green-Beckham was often on the other end.
Green-Beckham shattered all kinds of state records in this
contest. He became Missouri's all-time leader in career
receiving yards (4073) and TD receptions (51) and broke his own
record for a single season of receiving yards with 1622. When
the dust had cleared, Hillcrest took home a 49-28 victory. The
Hornets, who finished in 7th place in the in the Ozark
Conference, have the always tough Union Wildcats (10-1) waiting
for them in the next round.
Don't always judge a team by its record. Check out the opponents
prior to jumping to a conclusion. Many observers didn't give the
Helias Crusaders (7-4) much of a chance against the Carthage
Tigers (9-2). However, Helias had lost to class 6 powerhouses-
Howell and Hickman. The Crusaders had also lost to Quincy-ND
(still in Illinois playoffs) and state power-Hannibal. That
being said, the Crusaders completely stopped the Tiger run game
in its 34-13 victory. Carthage had just 43 yards in 21 carries
(prior to its last drive when both teams were playing out the
clock) while the Crusaders had a wonderful blend of 173 rushing
and 122 passing in their offensive game.
