Triple
plays are often the result of poor base running. Not so
in the Championship game of the Oak Ridge Tournament. With the
host school leading 1-0 over Leopold in the 3rd inning and
runners on 1st & 2nd, a ground ball to 2B who shoveled it to the
shortstop making the pivot and the relay. Meanwhile, the runner,
running aggressively, tried scoring from second base. NOTHING
DOING! Cut down, it was the everyday 4-6-3-2 triple play for
Leopold. Leopold went on to grab a 6-3 win-- their first
win every over Oak Ridge and their first tournament Championship
in the Oak Ridge Tourney. Leading the way from the plate was
Lance Seiler who was two of three ( a double and Home run). Stay
tuned though...a conference rematch is this week and Oak
Ridge(5-5) will have their ace ready for the Wildcats (6-3).
NO-HIT SECTION....
Sending you news of our first
no-no's of the year! (I'm sure that they've been more but these
are the first that we've learned about in MO). Damon Adrian
(Eugene) twirled a 5 inning no-no in the Eagles 10-0, 5 inning
victory this week. Adrian walked the first batter then retired
the next 15 batters. At the plate, Adrian helped himself by
going 2 for 2 with an RBI. Eugene(10-1) is ranked as the #4 team
of Class 2 in Missouri.
Southpaw Tyler Burgess (Webb
City) was sharp in his 4-0 shutout win over six-time defending
class 2 Kansas Champ, St. Marys-Colgan(7-1). Burgess raised his
personal record to 5-1 as the the Cardinals(9-3) handed
the Panthers their first loss of the year. Burgess struck out 13
batters, permitted but 2 hits and walked none in the win. This
type of sterling performance is nothing new to this Sophomore,
he spun a no-no himself earlier this year as the Cardinals
tumbled Carl Junction 8-0 (15 K's on that day!)
Union Coach, Ryan Bailey, must
have thought it was ground hog day. His Wildcat team won two
Four Rivers games by identical 10-0 scores. On Tuesday, Tyler
Thompson recorded our 2nd no-hitter of the week as he
white-washed New Haven. He was followed by a two-hitter on
Thursday from Ashton Goudeau as Union shut down St James in 5
innings.
OTHER PITCHING GEMS.....
#2, Class 4 team, the Rock Bridge
Bruins(12-1) used Ryan Phillips stout, if not spectacular
pitching, to edge Hickman 3-2. Phillips scattered 8 hits during
his time on the bump and used the bat of Todd Reller who drove
home all three runs. The Kewpies(5-4) scored the first earned
run of the year against Phillips in this contest.
Sr. Payton Bosserman raised the
Grain Valley record to 8-2 with an
8-0 win over Harrisonville in
a MO River Valley-West conference game. The Eagles crossed the plate six
times in the first inning then rode the 3 hit, 12 strikeout, 2
walk performance of Bosserman to the winners circle.
Helias', Jeremy Hart, scattered
six hits in six innings as the Crusadors upped their mark to
11-2 with a 6-2 win over Mexico. Hart allowed just one earned
run and struck out four in his first work from the mound all
year.
#1 vs #1 in one game
!!.......................
When Eureka (#1, Class 4 team)
hosted Notre Dame (Cape)-#1 ranked class 3 team--something had
to give. Eureka scored a run in the bottom of the 7th on a sac
fly to left field from Chase Bollinger driving home a sliding
Logan Meyer to give the Wildcats a 3-2 victory. The game was
played in a drizzle though out most of the game. ND dropped to
8-1 on the year while Eureka completed a really tough week. The
Wildcats(11-4), who entered the week with only one loss all
year, dropped games to Marquette, Vianney, Parkway West in a
four day span. The win over the defending Class 3 Champions made
their weekend much more enjoyable !
I DIDN'T GIVE AT THE
OFFICE, I GAVE ON THE FIELD...
Perryville's bats were completely
silent for 5 2/3 innings as Kyle Rollet (St Vincents) was
dominating on the mound. A lone single in the 6th to end the
no-no attempt did not result in any runs so the Pirates trailed
the Indians 2-0 going into the bottom of the 7th. A HBP started
the 7th for Perryville, a line drive hit which was misplayed
allowed the first run to score. After a wild pitch and a walk,
the tying run scored on a double play. Extra innings...after St
Vincent (4-6) went out without a run in the top of 8th, the
walking bugaboo bit the Indians. With one out, a walk (Rollet
replaced), stolen base had winning run on 2B. When the next
batter struck out, the ball got away from the catcher, his
errant throw to first base went into right field and the winning
run scored from second base....ugh....what a way to lose to a
rival.
But...it happens frequently in
baseball. The team that finishes with the most runs doesn't
always do it by scoring runs on their own.
Hickman was holding onto a 5-2
lead over Jeff City(8-8) as the final half of the 7th inning
began. Without a hit, the Jays win 6-5 on an error, three
hit-by-pitch, wild pitch and two walks. Just a bit over a week
ago, Hickman pummeled the Jays 17-3 ! You figure.....
Conference glances...
Hazelwood West sits atop the
Suburban North Conference with a two game lead in conference
(8-4, 7-0). Justin Harms (.474) and Robert Wright (.440) have
been the power sources at the plate. The Wildcats have a very
tough stretch between May 6 to May 12 as they'll face Hazelwood
Central (9-5,5-2) in a Sub North game. Following the Hawks are
Holt (10-4), Howell (11-5) and Howell Central(10-5) as the
Wildcats take a tour through the GAC South.
Despite the glittering records of
the three teams listed above, the GAC-South leader (at the
moment) is Ft Zumwalt South (12-2,1-0). The Bulldogs have held
their opponents to three runs or less in ten of their 14 games.
AJ Walkenhorst, is the horse, as he carries a 4-0 record and a
0.64 ERA.
The Holt Indians also look to the
mound for their strength. Holt's pitching has only allowed 11
runs in the last 8 games ! Nolan Fisher
brings a 3-0 mark and a 0.95 ERA.
Meanwhile, Tony Perkins has his
Howell Vikings blasting the ball all over the place. His team
has scored double figures six times and been held under six runs
only four time this year. Brett Graves (.481) and Jake Ivory
(.455) are leading the way.
