We had the pleasure of enjoying some
absolutely gorgeous weather as the curtain went up for spring
sports for 2010.
Let's take a look at some of the
baseball tournament results from
the early going.
Tony Perkins (Francis
Howell-baseball coach) has put together an absolutely terrific
tourney in the Midwest Classic. He has expanded the
Midwest Classic to 16 teams. While most are St. Louis area
teams, there are teams from Chicago area, Sioux Falls SD, Ray-Pec
in this years event. Each team plays two games in pool play,
then is seeded for the Championship or Consolation bracket. This
year Vianney breezed to the title. The closest game for the
Golden Griffins was the first round game as they rallied from an
8-2 deficit to win 15-13 over Ray-Pec. A similar story played
out in the semifinals when O'Gorman (Sioux Falls, SD) plated 8
runs in the top of the first but couldn't stop the red-hot
Vianney bats as Dalton Hewitt led the way with a HR, two
doubles, 5 RBI's in the 21-11 Vianney victory. Using the strong
hurling of Brian Schwabe, Vianney shut out Summit (4-2)10-0 for
the tournament crown. Vianney is averaging 12.4 runs per game in
their first 10 games as they've gone 9-1.
In the Troy Tournament a week
earlier, Mike Hunt's Eureka team took home the first place
hardware with a 5-1 win over a talented Ft Zumwalt South team.
Aaron Vogt banged out 3 hits and Brett Vanover had two hits with
3 ribbies as Eureka pounded out 12 hits. Speaking of pounding
the ball, Eureka outslugged CBC 20-11 in the semifinal game in a
game that saw 8 (yes..eight) home runs by the two teams! Can you
imagine hitting 5 home runs and losing ...ah, the beauty of high
school baseball.
In the Buffalo Tournament
Championship game, Clinton knocked of Springfield Catholic 5-4
as Clinton capitalized on the five defensive errors by the
Fighting Irish.
Forsythe won the "Right off the
Bat" Tournament with a convincing 12-1 win over Crane (4-3) .
Forsythe is off to a sizzling start and is now 7-1 on the young
year.
NEWCOMER of the WEEK...
The tradition rich Oran
(2-0)baseball program opened its arms to greet the terrific
pitching performance of Freshman Kody Moore. Coming in after the
starter had arm problems after just 2 innings, Moore surrendered
only 3 hits, struck out 7 in the last 5 innings as his teammates
rallied for a big 6 run 5th inning to grab a 7-3 win over
Leopold. Moore retired the first 7 batters that he faced as his
pitching turned the momentum completely around. Coach Mitch
Wood, a frequent visitor to the STATE baseball Final Four, was
very pleased with the outing.
STRONG PITCHING
PERFORMANCES....
Mark Ryan (Carthage) went the
distance as the Tigers tumbled the talented Webb City Cardinal
team 6-4 in the opening round of the Branson/Republic Leadoff
Tournament. Ryan gave up only two hits but struggled with
control as he walked 13. Ryan worked into and out of trouble as
the Cardinals left the bases loaded in two innings and left two
men on base on three other innings !
Riley Veith (Purdy) shut out
Diamond 4-0 on a sharp, complete game two-hitter. Veith struck
out eight batters as Purdy raised won their second straight game
after losing the first three games.
In the Chaffee 5-3 win over
Kelly, Andrew Dooley pitched the complete game win. Dooley
allowed no earned runs and struck out eight batters. Dooley also
banged out two hits to help himself to the win.
WILDEST GAME OF THE
WEEK................
The wind played all kinds of
havoc with the defense of both teams, there were 30 hits, 13
errors (many attributable to wind) and the losing team batted
all the way around its lineup in each of the first three innings
! Fredericktown outlasted Saxony Lutheran 19-17 in a score
more suited for fall sports than spring. Spencer Sander
had six RBI's in this game to raise his early season total to
14. Do you have a candidate for the wildest game of the week for
the week of April 5-10, shoot me an email with some info at

Best RALLY OF THE WEEK....
Trailing 8-5, Rolla went double
figures (10 runs) in the bottom of the 6th inning to snatch a
15-8 win over St. Clair. Blayne Shockley went 2 for 3 while
Jacob Zelasko was 2 for 4 in the Rolla win. If you have
any BIG RALLIES this week...let me know at

TEAMS OFF TO
HOT
STARTS...
Involved
in two early season powerful tournaments
, GAC South contenders Francis Howell (6-3) and Ft Zumwalt South
(7-2) have already made an early impression. Brett Graves has
been a two-way contributor for the Vikings. He's hitting .424
and 2-0 on the bump with a sharp 1.91 ERA. Meanwhile the
Bulldogs, whose only losses have been to Eureka (6-0) and
Vianney (9-1) are enjoying the sizzling start of Fred Ford at
the plate. Ford is hitting .560, with a slugging average of 1.44
and has six home runs.
Kickapoo is 6-3 with some early
impressive wins and narrow losses.
Many teams use their #3-4
starters in these hectic tournaments. Coming to post-season
time, the #1-2 hurlers will carry the load.
Oakville's record is unblemished
at 7-0. The Tigers won the Lindbergh-Mehlville Tournament. After
falling behind 11-0 to Northwest(4-3), the Tigers won a
thrilling 15-12 win in the tournament. This week, the Oakville-
Lafayette game may be heard on
www.prepcasts.com. Check
it out on Wednesday !!
Strafford, generally a strong
program, is sitting at 5-2 which includes a 10-3 win over
Stoutland-seemingly always a state-level power.
Ft Zumwalt North (5-0) is often
overshadowed by the larger schools in the district but currently
is atop the GAC North Conference with a perfect record. The
Panthers pitching staff has only permitted four runs in the five
Panther wins !!
We've mentioned them a couple
times but we don't want to miss the Eureka Wildcats at 6-0. The
Troy Championship is a wonderful feather in Mike Hunt's baseball
cap. Eureka already owns wins over Ft Z South (7-2) and CBC
(8-2).
In Jefferson County, Crystal City
is holding a 5-0 record in the early going but have a long way
to go.
