As promised last week, let's take a look at some of the girls basketball teams -- some long term looks and others for this week.

Webb City and Incarnate Word are ranked #1 respectively in classes 4 and 5 in the most recent state poll. Each team continues to rack up wins over high quality teams. In next year's Prepcasts Shootout III, we'll have both these teams squaring off ! What a game !

Check out the GAC South Girls Conference....Ft Zumwalt West (17-4, 4-0, ranked #4 in class 5 in last rankings) has captured most of the headlines this year, and deservedly so, since the Jags are again compiling a great year under Coach Monica Tritz. Kelsey Jones, Jasmine and Janna Swopshire are the leaders of this well balanced team. But, there are several other teams playing very strong ball. Ft Zumwalt South (19-3, 2-2) has just moved into the State's top 10 at #10. Julie Hlinkak and Shannon McKenzie average double figures for the Bulldogs. Troy (19-4, 4-1) led by Sr. Maggie Flynn have only been beaten by Ft Z West, Ft Z South and Blue Springs.

Another team often in the shadows in the MWAA White Division is the Cor Jesu Chargers (17-4). The Chargers won the Webster Groves Winter Classic this week with a field that included state powers- St Joseph, Rock Bridge, Ft Zumwalt West. Meg Riley and Liz Sinclair provided a staunch inside- outside game during the 3 wins this week.

NEW SCORING RECORD in MISSOURI...

The State of Missouri has a new Girls Basketball Scoring Leader!  Hannah Wilkerson (Miller High) broke the record at the 6:21 mark of the 2nd quarter in the 75-54 win over Morrisville. Wilkerson now has 3,234 points as she broke the record of Melissa Grider (3,211) with a free throw. Grider, who played at Morrisville (ironically) in her playing days, was on hand to award a plaque to Wilkerson.  Wilkerson finished the night with 32 points as Miller raised its season record to 15-4.

Notre Dame (Cape)(17-4) knocked rival Cape-Central (12-6) 69-53 in the Show-Me Centre this week. Sr. center- Jane Morrill dropped in 26 points as the Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead and kept things under control from there. The Bulldogs often are state contenders from the Southeast part of the State.

In the smaller school classifications, Meadow Heights (12-5) beat the always tough Delta Bobcats (12-5) 48-42. Delta's big 3rd quarter cut the lead to a single point entering the final quarter but Meadow Hts responded and won going away.

Liberty's Maddie Mason converted two free throws with only 3.6 seconds remaining. These FT pushed the Bluejays into the winners circle (again) as they edged a fired-up Blue Springs squad 52-51. Blue Springs had just taken the lead at the 7 second mark but fouled Mason. Liberty had beaten Blue Springs a few weeks ago so the Wildcats (15-3) wanted some revenge on their home court. Liberty (15-6) was playing without without star guard, Kaycie Clark who was playing soccer.

1000 POINT PLATEAU

Taylor Lipps, 4 year player, from Grain Valley became the 3rd Eagle player to reach this lofty plateau on her 3rd point of the night in the 61-40 win over Oak Grove. Lipps, currently wearing a knee brace as she recovers from an injury, finished the night with 8 points.

In Jefferson County action, Crystal City Lady Hornets (13-5) edged St. Vincents (10-5) 39-38 in a key conference game. The Indians missed a game tying free throw attempt in the waning seconds of the game.

In a battle of State ranked teams, St Francis Borgia (14-4) edged St James (15-3) 46-44. The score was as close as the rankings for these class 4 teams. Borgia is ranked #5 and the Lady Tigers #8. Prepcasts is thrilled to announce that St. James will be part of the Prepcasts Elite Girls Shootout III next year. This high quality program will add to what promises to have some of the best teams in the Midwest. An opponent is still being solidified.

On the boys side, St. Francis Borgia (20-0) continues to roll with an impressive road win at DeSmet last Tuesday 57-39. Coming out on fire, the Knights hit 6 treys' in the first quarter.  Nathan Scheer hit inside shots, outside shots, mid-range, driving shots, post-up shots, whatever...he finished with 23 points. DeSmet who trailed 21-3 at the end of one and 35-11 at half, rallied to cut the lead to 12 points early in the 4th but the experienced Knights settled down and stretched the lead back again. Replay maybe heard on www.prepcasts.com

In the Four Rivers Conference, Coach Ben Smith and his St. James Tigers (11-7) have jumped to an early 2-0 conference lead. Five conference games remain with four of the teams holding winning records for the Tigers. Chase Ford leads the scoring for the Tigers at 16.9.

Looking back to last Friday, Prepcasts had three tremendous Boys Basketball games.  A video presentation of the CBC-Chaminade game featuring two of the top St. Louis teams was a great ball game. Chaminade won 75-68.  Oakville topped Parkway South in Suburban 71-63 as they iced the Suburban West title with the win. The Tigers 19-4 record has caught many off-guard this year after graduating a talented Keith Pickens (now performing at Missouri State). In the GAC South, Ft Zumwalt West remained as the only unbeaten team in conference play with a 69-60 win over Troy (15-7). The replays of all of these games involving very strong teams is available 24-7, 365 free-- even the video. Take a look at that action-- you'll love it on www.prepcasts.com  This week we continue our playoff hockey action, girls and boys basketball.
