Sept 27, 2010
We have pretty much reached the halfway
point in the 2010 fall high school season. Many schools are
seeing good things to their season and good chances for post
season opportunities. Others... well there is always next year.
But no matter what, there is always great high school action to
write about. So here we go, skimming a few of last week's
highlights (Mostly local this week)
TAKE THAT, MCC!
How about the week that the Oakville soccer team (8-3-2) put
together last week? First, they kicked away Vianney on Sept. 18,
3-1. Then they opened play last Tuesday in the 56th annual CYC
Tournament with a 1-0 win over Ft. Zumwalt West. Wednesday they
held on for a 1-0 win over top-ranked Chaminade. Thursday with a
semi-final spot already clinched, they tied St. Mary's 1-1. In
that semi-final on Friday night, the Tigers took a 2-0 lead into
halftime and used that cushion to spark a 3-2 win over second-
ranked SLUH. Their reward for all that was a game against
defending state champion and fourth-ranked CBC in the finals on
Saturday night! Playing four MCC Conference teams in a week
(three that were ranked 1st, 2nd, and 4th) is not for the faint
of heart. Not to worry, getting a goal from Josh O'Brien early
and one from Luke Miller on a rebound inside the games last nine
minutes. the Tigers completed the dream week by defeating CBC
2-1. They claimed the Msgr. Louis Meyer Division. You don't have
to play that kind of schedule to win a state title. Oakville was
not even ranked before entering last week's action. I bet they
are this week!
Speaking of Oakville, keep your eye
on those top-ranked Lady Tigers on the softball field. They
moved to 17-0 this week and have a run differential of 144 runs
for and just 17 against!
I was in on the broadcast at the Oakville-Howell North game last
Friday and the winner of my weekly "Caught My Eye Award" goes to
Tiger running back Darrion Moore. His night consisted of rushing
for 244 yards and touchdown runs of 8 and 72 yards - even though
Oakville was beat 40-19.
STREAKS... THEY COME AND THEY GO!
In a game broadcast on the Prepcasts. com network, St Mary's
made it 14 wins in a row over cross city rival DuBourg pasting
the Cavaliers 35-7. Effectively using a flex-bone offense, St.
Mary's totaled just over 400 yards. Kevin Hennessy had touchdown
runs of 27 and 20 yards to pace the Dragons.
Highlighted by a 93-yard touchdown run by Chris Tidwell,
Collinsville got by Edwardsville Friday for a 21-16 win. It was
just the second time since 1982 that the Kahoks defeated
Edwardsville.
Lindbergh's streak of Suburban West Conference wins came to an
end Friday night when they were beat on the road at Marquette
35-21. The Flyers went undefeated last season in the Suburban
West to claim its championship and were 4-0 in conference this
year entering this game. All that came to an end when Mustang
Quarterback Matt Seevers rushed for 175 yards, and passed for
129. He hit Dante McKinney for a 10-yard TD pass, ran one in
from 1-yards out and connected with Sean Ulrich from 17 yards
out.
Columbia Hickman snuck out a 20-17 win over Helias Friday night
and improved their record to 4-1 for the first time since 2005.
STILL ON TOP
The state's top-ranked Rockhurst Hawklets (5-0) rolled over
fourth-ranked Rock Bridge (3-2) last Friday night 40-21 using a
pair of interceptions in each half returned for touchdowns to
spark the win. Rockhurst scored on the game's first play to set
the tone. They also rushed for 347 yards in the game. Rock
Bridge's two losses have come against the state top two teams in
Rockhurst and Hazelwood Central.
Following the lead of their strong defense who forced five
turnovers, Kearney the Class 4 No.1 ranked squad, took down
Class 5 and third-ranked Staley 21-3 on Friday. . Quarterback
Shane Hartzler highlighted the offense by hooking up twice for
touchdown passes to Sam Gregory of 15 and 23 yards.
In the St. Louis area polls both top-ranked teams played a team
in the top ten. East St. Louis rolled once again blasting
O'Fallon 52-6 while Mater Dei exploded for 53 points and shut
out third-ranked Breeze.
Hazelwood Central (5-0) stays at No. 2 in the St. Louis area as
well as in the state poll. Their games have all been close and
Saturday's 21-14 win over Hazelwood East was no exception.
Chaminade (4-0) got one touchdown from Rob Standard and Clark
Costello returned an interception 61 yards to wrap up an MCC
showdown with DeSmet as the Red Devils prevailed 28-21.
Webster Groves continues to shine riding Aaron Daniels touchdown
runs of 5, 1 and 31 yards to a 48-14 route over Summit.
But there will be a bit of a shake up in the areas large school
polls as fifth-ranked Howell and sixth-ranked Lindbergh lost
this past weekend.
NIGHTS TO REMEMBER
Seen as how we are talking about staying on top, James Hawkins
scored all three touchdowns last Saturday in his teams' 21-14
win over Kirkwood. Those three touchdowns ran his season total
to 18 which leads the St. Louis area.
Blue Springs defeated Lee's Summit last week in a 69-42
barn-burner! Darrian Miller racked up 267 yards including runs
of 29, 65, 28, 3 and 39 yards. The blue chipper from Lee's
Summit was Sam Sealer who had 16 catches four TD and 264 yards.
Both teams are now 3-2.
SLUH's Trevor McDonagh tossed four first half touchdown passes
Friday night is his team's 52-20 win over Vianney. McDonagh's
tosses of 14, 23, 55 and 28 yards moved him to on the year. He
also rushed for a 3-yard TD. He has thrown 15 touchdowns for the
season.
How about CBC's Courtland Leake-Smith? He has plenty to tell the
grandkids about his night last Friday in the Cadets 45-31 win
over Francis Howell. His night only included a 94 yard kick-off
return as well as a 99 yarder! He threw in a blocked punt in the
game too. CBC was ranked 10th in the St. Louis area and Howell
fifth.
Zach Tobin also continued his fine season throwing a pair of
touchdowns while running for two more in Civic Memorial's 35-9
win over Waterloo. Tobin has tossed 13 touchdown strikes so far
in 2010.
