Let’s take a look at some of the best records after 2 weeks of competition. Some familiar names and some “new kids on the block”. Girls basketball first….
Sullivan Eagles (5-0) are led by the trio of Meghan Bailey, Maggie Jones and Hailee Parks, all who are averaging double figures.
Howell Central is unbeaten at 5-0 as 6-2 Junior center Shakara Jones is scoring at a rate of 24.2 as she led the way to the Trinity Championship from her post position.
Nerinx Hall has the most wins as an unbeaten team to this point at 7-0. The Markers won their own tournament and the momentum of a Final Four trip has left a major “mark” on this program. Surprisingly, 4 teams in MWAA White are under .500 in first two weeks !
The loaded Suburban West conference has the Mehlville Panthers and Marquette Mustangs each at 5-0 while Lafayette Lancers, Northwest Lions and Kirkwood Pioneers are lurking the shadows with 4-1 records. Some great conference games loom there !
Zumwalt West Jaguars are 5-1 and have tasted tough battle with two narrow wins over Borgian (30-29) and Hazelwood East (60-58). That experience should pay off.
Clopton Hawks (4-0) have their eyes set on Mizzou Arena again as they are scoring at a tremendous 73 ppg during the first two weeks!
On
the boys side of the court..
The New Haven Shamrocks, fielding a roster of 7 seniors, have run off to
a 6-0 mark.
Jay Blossom’s Webster Groves Statesman demonstrated their deep, deep talented roster this week. After winning Thursday in the StL Shootout, their star center, Adrian Clayborn, took a visit to University of Missouri for football. The Statesman promptly won their own tournament on 3 consecutive nights to be sitting on a 5-0 record.
The GAC North has two teams with unblemished records. The St Charles Pirates (6-0) and the Duchesne Pioneers (4-0) should have some great games down the road.
The DuBourg Cavaliers (3-0) won the South Side Classic despite missing a key senior on the front line and displayed flexibility in scoring throughout the tournament.
While the Troy Trojans (4-1) have garnered all the headlines (justifiably), the Jaguars of Zumwalt West have yet to taste defeat at 3-0.
What will happen as the weeks roll along through holiday tournaments, league play in January/early February, district and post season. Stay with us, we’ll keep you posted.
