Summer 06 begins..
R&R
Well, not exactly…in this era, high school athletes must use the summer
months to develop skills and athletic prowess. In some cases, the 50-60
summer baseball games demand almost a full time commitment. It’s my
opinion, all summer programs MUST give their athletes a minimum of two days
a week of rest from the given sport. This isn’t a job, playing every
day doesn’t guarantee a scholarship, play and play a lot but keep
it in perspective.
Roids…
All the publicity about drugs given to the professional sport athletes recently
has surely drawn attention to this chronic problem. Don’t think that
high school athletes are immune from usage. The high school students have
the pressure of college scholarships (a major cost to their families). Some
day - not right away - but some day, there will be national tests for illegal
drugs.
World
Cup for USA??
Despite 30-40 years ( a couple generations) of youth soccer development
in the USA, the Americans still struggle to compete at the highest level.
I don’t want to hear that the Europeans have played for a couple hundred
years. This generation of Europeans have played just as long as the Americans—their
entire life. In fact, Americans have probably spent more money on tournaments,
camps, specialized training than any other country. Why then can’t
we be up with the big boys at crunch time? I realize that our children have
many more sports to choose during their youthful days. This leads to many
superior athletes choosing other sports, other than soccer. Nevertheless,
a country our size should be able to find 20 superior soccer players to
compete with the World.
