June 5th
Back from Columbia with lots of thoughts…
.
Most Excitement in the Air
…Class 4 championship game between Hazelwood Central and Vianney was
BY FAR the most enthusiastic, positive, engaged crowd in recent memory.
From the 1st pitch until the last out of the 8th inning, the fans of these
ST Louis schools were tremendous. Vianney won 3-1 in 8!
What
does the “S” stand for?
…At some schools, the S represents sophomores or satisfactory, not
at Webb City! With 5 sophs in starting lineup and another pitching several
innings, these highly talented players may have “S” on their
chest! The defending state champions edged the Titans of Lee Summit West
6-5 in the title tilt. Will it be a threepeat for the Cardinals next year?
Ingredients
for a trip to the Finals in Baseball…
…In no particular order, in addition to the usual—strong pitching,
good defense, and good hitting-- you MUST have 2 very good pitchers, an
excellent shortstop, a strong armed catcher, outfielders who can track down
flies in the larger ball park, a strong bunting game, some speed.
Who
wrote the book on manufacturing runs?
…it seems like Coach Byron Hagler (with over 515 wins in his pocket)
must be the author. His teams bunt, bunt & run, steal, delay steal,
put ground balls in play- a real joy to watch a sensational coach perform!
The Hillcrest Hornets (like Licking in previous years) were always in the
game due to their ability to score without really banging the ball around.
It
Ain’t Over til it’s Over (thank you Yogi!) Award
…Lee Summit West Titans had 2 outs in 7th, trailed 6-2 but continued
to work to draw walks, dumped in a hit or two, capitalized on an error and
suddenly it was 6-5 with 2 runners in scoring position. Congratulations
to Coach Kim Rohlfing for keeping his ballclub focused until the final out.
No
High Fives—Just Handshakes
…Mgr Cam Jury missed the 3rd place game of the Oak Park Northmen.
Sick ? NO-not this 3 time state champion. Cam attended his son’s wedding
scheduled for the same day. Directing the game was another son, Zach. Zach’s
career is now 1-0 after a 3-2 thriller over the Hornets of Hillcrest.
