March 13
A great weekend of Class 4/5 basketball ended with some tremendous games on Saturday night. Let’s take a look at some thoughts from our 1st weekend in Mizzou Arena….
….Vashon
Wolverines demonstrated their poise, persistence and skill in both games.
Trailing the Hawklets of Rockhurst by 12 mid-3rd quarter and still down
by a point at the 1 minute mark, the Wolverines squeezed out a 68-65 victory
in the semis. Trailing again to a very talented Kickapoo team, again Floyd
Irons’ team rallied to take home the big hardware. I can’t remember
the Championship team having to come from behind so late in both games!
…. Roy Green’s well drilled, very strong and talented Poo team
demonstrated, again, their basketball savvy, poise and skill. Kyle Kirk’s
powerful inside game with the guard tandem of Tyler Richardson and Kyle
Vaughan provided an inside and outside game that most teams couldn’t
match.
….Brianna Culberson was phenomenal in the 3rd place girls victory
for the Jeff City Jays. Brianna closed her brilliant career, as the leading
scorer and rebounder in Jay basketball history, scored 26 points, 18 rebounds,
8-8 from the line, broke the press—did it all. She will continue her
basketball exploits at the University of Denver next year!
…Speaking of superlative performances, Alex Moosmann’s 26 points,
superb perimeter shooting, pull up jumpers were totally awesome in both
games. Coupled with teammates who all can shoot (this team shot over 50%
from the floor for both games combined), rebound (inside players) and vary
their defensive zones, Borgia was clearly the best Class 4 boys team and
lived up to their #1 ranking throughout 05-06 season.
….#1 IWA struggled offensively in the first half of their championship
tilt against #2 ND de Sion. The Storm’s multiple defensive looks confused
the Red Knights during the opening 16 minutes. At halftime, Coach Dan Rolfes
simplified things offensively and his team pulled away to their 2nd state
title. With only 1 senior starter, albeit the leader of the offensive punch-Felicia
Chester, the Red Knights are already looking ahead to next year.
….Coach Yancey Little must be wondering what he can do for an encore
? In his first two years, his clubs have taken home the State Championship
Trophies to Ozark. Again, strong guard play, Callie Widel and Katie Bond-both
SR led the way to the trophy room. Congrats to Ozark for having both girls
and boys team compete in Columbia !
…Hazelwood East girls exceeded the expectations of most observers
with the arrival at the “Big Dance”. Channon Haywood, who Earl
Austin Jr called one of the “most talented athletes” in Columbia
over the weekend, led her speedy, relentless team well over the weekend.
This
weekend, www.Prepcasts.com will cover all 24 class 1,2,3 basketball games—both
girls and boys. We’ll have 8 games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Join us again for all the great excitement of Championship basketball! Again,
arrangements are being finalized to have all winning coaches join Prepcasts
for a short Post game interview. Those interviews are special, as coaches
come to the microphone, still invigorated by their winning team accomplishments.
