Weekend #2—Class
1-2-3—it may have been smaller schools but the thrills and excitement
were sky high! Some observations about this weekend….
….Gary Glasscock’s Metro girls, who toughened themselves all
year long against far larger schools, glided to their 1st title! The depth,
balance and Moneisha Davis’ play in the championship game was just
too much for the talented Clopton Hawks. Next year, the Panthers of Metro
will move up a level into class 3 so we won’t see a 3rd rematch between
these two perennial powerhouses.
…the terrific Class 3 boys Championship game between the Ritter Lions
and Charleston Bluejays showcased some of quickest perimeter players over
both weekends. The furious pace of the defenders dictated a game that was
absolutely enjoyable to view. These guards can play at any level! Marvin
Neals’ Lions took home the big hardware this year but both teams played
like Champions.
…..Biggest Comeback Award goes to Marion C Early against W.Platte
in the 3rd Place game of Class 2 girls! It was awesome. Down by 19 at the
start of the final quarter, multiple substitutions, varied presses, frequent
fouls (this game set back the schedule by 45 minutes for the day) and key
baskets turned the tide. MCE won this battle 68-64 in OT-it was a great
way to open day #2!
….Jefferson Boys reminded me of the Knicks of the early 70’s—very
unselfish team players, no one player stands out, excellent on free throws,
fundamentally sound, they do what they need to do to win. The 74-61 State
title game (Class 1 Boys) against a taller, and also talented, Bell City
Cub team capped off an unbeaten season!
….My heart went out to the Silex teams. Both teams qualified for the
“Big Dance” so there was excitement all over the town last weekend.
Mother Nature doused this joy by bouncing a tornado through the area early
last week damaging homes and property. Nothing like a dose of reality to
bring all in the community back to earth in a quick way. Congratulations
to both Owl teams for a great year!
….Pembroke Hill successfully defended their girls Class 3 crown as
they cruised by the Falcons of Blair Oaks 66-40. Lone Senior, Kaneisha Agee,
ran the offense superbly, completely shut down opponents, passed impeccably,
drove and dribbled at will throughout both games. This talented team has
many parts that contribute to a well oiled machine on the court. Will they
three-peat?
…..In a losing cause, Tomas Brock of Mt Vernon was absolutely tremendous.
He single handedly kept the Mountaineers in the semifinal game against the
Charleston Bluejays. He broke the 30 point barrier as his team fell 65-60.
…DeKalb Tigers barely inched by Mound City 53-51 in sectionals. Two
weeks later, Coach Cory Elifrits guides her girls to an impressive 51-39
State Championship victory in Class 1 Girls Play. Using a deep bench, multiple
defensive presses and an up-tempo game, the Tigers overcame their height
disadvantage against the Leeton Bulldogs.
….As one sits in Mizzou Arena, its like you’re in a time capsule.
One great game after another comes your way! It’s great! If you’ve
never been there, try it! I’ve done it for many years and still really
enjoy all the excitement!
… Our Prepcasts Prime Time Players for 05-6 will be coming out soon
! You’ll enjoy seeing our top players that we’ve seen this year!
