Final Four Time! Class 4 and 5 reach the pinnacle of the season by earning the rights to play at Columbia, MO. The fickle finger of fate was twisting all around this past weekend…who would have thought…

…After expecting to reach the Dome in Football but failing, the Kirkwood Pioneers used their blazing speed and defense to knock off the DeSmet Spartans at UMSL on Saturday. Who would have thought that it’d be the basketball team, not the football team in the finals?
…The Rockhurst Hawklets had a real battle on their hands with the Broncos of Lee Summit North. Nip and tuck throughout the contest, the Hawklets will return to Mizzou Arena on the strength of their slim 59-57 victory. Who would have thought that Rockhurst would be behind most of the game with all the players returning from last years talented team?
…Quietly, but efficiently, the Lady Spartans of Hazelwood East raced by the Mehlville Panthers(28-2) in the class 5 quarters at UMSL. Behind by 15 points with 4:30 remaining, the Panthers went to the press game. Their phenomenal rally fell just short in the thrilling 52-50 game that sent the Spartans to their first final four ! Who would have thought that the team playing only 5 players in a up tempo game would be the team to make the late rally?
…Down by nine, the Kickapoo Chiefs turned to their gunner, Tyler Richardson, in the 2nd half. The Chiefs behind Richardson also sank FT, used the post men effectively and came all the way back to beat the red-hot Troy Trojans of Mitch Wilkens 53-49 in class 5 action on Saturday. This is the same Chief team that went triple-OT in the District semifinals to edge Nixa 68-67 ! Who would have thought the district semifinal would be the closest battle yet for Roy Green’s Chiefs prior to STATE?
…It really was a bloodbath in the other girls Class 5 game. One player suffered a bloody nose, another a broken jaw in the game between arch-rivals Incarnate Word and St Joe Academy. IWA beat St Joe for the third time this season as again the zone busting perimeter shooting of Ashley Barrett (IWA) provided Felicia Chester just enough space inside to be effective. Two years ago, St Joe won the class 5 championship with three Sophomores in the starting lineup. Erin McCarthy transferred out of town, Kelsey Luna and Mackenzie Stirmlinger were injured most of last year and this super pair of guards fell just short in the “war” against the Red Knights. Who would have thought that the championship in 04 would be the final one for this great team?
…Who would have thought that a team could hold another to just 32 points in a STATE boys quarterfinal game. The Ozark Tigers of Steve Hunter were awesome on defense in their 46-32 win over Logan-Rogersville. Ozark feels like this trip to Columbia is real special since, with a rising enrollment, they more than likely will be in Class 5 next year.
….Is three a charm ? Doug Light, current coach of Jeff City Lady Jays, brought the Union and Borgia girls teams to State. Who would have thought that he’d bring the Jays all the way to State so quickly?

www.prepcasts.com will cover all 16 games (all semifinal, 3rd place and Championship) games from Columbia this weekend! Get it all right here—sit back and listen to replays when the action has concluded. Tune us in!
