Can you believe it? 20 points down at 20-0 and then winning by 20 at 59-39!! That’s a first for me! The DeSmet Spartans shocked the entire State of Missouri by upsetting the #1 ranked Rockhurst Hawklets in this wild semifinal game. Passing the ball frequently (as Liberty had done the week before—see last weeks blog) QB Tommy Corwin was 23 of 40 for 479 yards in passing! Add the 179 yards in rushing and the Spartans amassed an amazing 592 yards of total offense. Rockhurst ground out 305 on the ground and 191 passing for 496 total yards. As usual, the key were the 4 key turnovers (3 of them boom-boom-boom early in the 4th) the Spartans forced. Hear this entire exciting replay on www.prepcasts.com

The Cameron-Montgomery County matchup in Class 2 should be a dandy. Each team comes to the Dome loaded with many offensive weapons. The Dragon defense has been tougher thus far. We’ll see if that holds true next Friday. Montgomery County has already upset the defending state Champions—Blair Oaks Falcons so they clearly have edge in that respect. Prepcasts has it at high noon on Friday.

Another upset saw the Hazelwood Central Hawks defeat the high-powered Kirkwood Pioneers 36-28. Hazelwood Central kept feeding Kelvin Austin the ball all night long on the ground. His 35 carries for 195 were just a part of the 50 rushes, 242 yards team total. While Kirkwood piled up 448 in offense, Central picked off 3 interceptions (1 going for the distance) on their way to a 36-14 lead with 7 minutes remaining in the game.

As Rockhurst was losing, one had to be amused by the many, many comments on the high school sports message boards. It seems that many fans on the West side of the State couldn’t decide which was worse—for Rockhurst to win or for St. Louis to have both teams in the 6A Final! That strong sentiment about East vs West is much, much stronger on the West side of the State. St. Louisans’ realize that there are 150 high schools in the metropolitan area—no one school is the St. Louis school!

Jubilation was at an all time high at Affton on Saturday. The Cougars shut out the Duchesne Pioneers 20-0 so that they will appear in the State Championship for the first time in their history! An improving defense that held the Pioneers to a scant 75 yards of offense and a ground game led by Mr. Inside (Sherman Golden) and Mr. Outside (DuJuan Jones) has been the recipe for this Thanksgiving Weekend Feast. Hear their game at 3:15 on Friday on Prepcasts.

The rematch games of class 5—Ray-Pec vs McCluer North should be much better than last year. A fumble by a NorthStar return man on a Kickoff was the catalyst last year that blew open the game. The Panthers seem to be better this year than last as they’re shooting for an unbeaten season.

The MICDS-Harrisonville tilt in Class 3 promises to again be a great game. It’s unlikely that it could be as sensational as the 45-42 – 2 OT victory that the Rams garnered last year. Few games could be that good! Each team is anxiously awaiting, while respecting, the other for Saturday’s 3:15 kickoff.
