November is the MSHSAA championship month. It’s bring to mind some
thoughts..
MICDS (10-0) under 1st year coach, Matt Irvin, appear poised, confident and talented enough to return to the Dome. The extremely fast, aggressive defense, always a trademark of the Rams teams, is still evident. On offense, MICDS runs their power game from the shotgun formation usually. Coupling a short passing game with many crossing patterns has given this team a slightly different twist. Listen to the MICDS victory over rival John Burroughs 35-8 on www.prepcasts.com to get your own feel for this team.
Football district competition (last 3 weeks) of season has given “new life” to some teams. Some District Champs were struggling prior to District play but rebounded with a strong finish. The biggest U turn was NE-Kansa City. They were 1-6 going into district, won 2 straight games and now head into sectional play at 3-7 ! Some other teams on the upswing-Republic Tigers (5-5), Lafayette-Higginsville (4-6), Timberland Wolves (5-5), St Paul-Lutheran-Saxony (4-5).
Only Ray-Pec stands among the unbeaten teams in Class 5 or 6 in Missouri!
One has to wonder how the mid-season blowout of Webster Groves over Eureka will effect their rematch?
Best 1st round game in sectionals-any level-Cassville (10-0) vs Bolivar (9-1)– Class 3!
The Lafayette Lancers used special team play to notch their District Title. Blocking a punt that was recovered by Alex Kister in the end zone was the key that opened the door to a 24-17 victory over intra-District rival the Marquette Mustangs.
Class 1 has 8 teams with 9 or more wins in sectionals! Skyline is the only unbeaten team at 10-0 while all the following are 9-1 for the year- Putnam County, S. Shelby, McAuley Catholic, Greenfield, Wellington-Napolean and two 9-1 teams will face each other Crest Ridge and Salisbury ! WOW—should be a terrific tournament!
While Blair Oaks and Cameron have talked all year about another tangle in the Dome, the Dragons have the Brookfield Bulldogs (8-2) and Lawson Cardinals (10-0) in their 1st two rounds of post season play staring them in the face.
Switching
to volleyball..
What about the O’Hara team ? When they dropped the opening game to
defending state champ, Borgia 25-18, they seemed unfazed and rebounded to
win 25-17, 25-21 to grab the Class 3 Title. Hear that game and all 4 title
games on www.prepcasts.com
IWA lost an 26-24 in an emotional 1st game to St Joseph Academy. The Red Knights kept their spot on the throne of Class 4 as they snatched 25-20 and 25-18 victories.
