The St Mary’s Dragons pushed the league leading St Francis Borgia Knights (13-4) right down to the final out as the Knights hung on for a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Dragons on Saturday from Divis Field on the SM Campus. Watch the entire replay of this quickly played game on –

Each pitcher breezed through the first 2 innings as the minimum of 6 batters went to the plate for each team. In the 3rd, Justin Baylard singled to open the inning for the Knights. The next batter, attempting to sacrifice, bunted to the 3B side. Pitcher Matt Causino fielded the ball, lost his footing so both runners were safe. Phillip Swoboda then advanced each runner with a sacrifice bunt. After a fly out, SFB pitcher, Spencer Juergens, singled home 2 runs with a base hit to center.

SFB struck again in the 5th with the score still 2-0. With two outs and the bases clear, two consecutive batters walked and 2B Justin Horace drove home a run with a single. It was 3-0 through 5 innings.

In the 6th, Daniel Wroblewski singled to open the inning. The next 2 batters were retired so it didn’t appear that much would happen offensively. However, Matt Causino lined a base hit to left to set the table for the Dragons’ leading hitter, Joe Ross. Ross took drove an outside pitch down the right field line driving home a run. The Knights perfect relays cut down Causino trying to score from 1B to end the inning.

It was 3-1 as the Dragons came to bat in the bottom of the 7th. After 1 out, Zach Ortinau reached base on an error. Jack Gathard got an infield single which was followed by an infield error on Lorenzo Garcia’s ground ball. The bases were loaded with 1 out now.  Daniel Wroblewski grounded out to the 2B scoring Ortinau. With the tying run on 3B and winning run on 2B, the game ended on a ground out to 3B. Final: SFB 3  SM 2

Both pitchers were terrific! Matt Causino allowed just 5 hits and 2 walks. He struck out 4 batters, worked efficiently by demonstrating pin-point control throughout the entire contest against the league leaders. Spencer Juergens also went the distance for the Knights, permitting 6 hits while getting 15 ground ball outs in the contest. Remember, Juergens drove home the first 2 runs of the game also!

The only hitters with two hits in the game were Jack Gathard (SM) and Justin Horace (SFB).  Click here to view the game
