hazelwood central logo DesmetKodner2011Click here for the game … This Class 6, District 2 Sectional would be a rematch of the exciting week two match up between the 6-4 De Smet Spartans and the 10-0, number one ranked, Hazelwood Central Hawks.  In the first meeting, the Hawks won the game with a touchdown pass with 14.7 seconds on the clock to escape with a 42-38 victory.  This contest, with a great deal more riding on the result, was expected to be another close and high scoring affair.  The Hawks scored on their very first possession on a 1 yard touchdown run from quarterback Mike Glass, however the 77 yard drive was highlighted by a sensational 50 yard pass completion to wide out Matt Quarells who stretched out to make an eye popping finger tip catch.  The Spartans fumbled on their first play from scrimmage on their own 16 yards line where Hazelwood Central promptly scored one play later on a pass from Glass to Xavier Sneed and before everyone got settled into their seats, the Hawks were up 14-0.  The Spartans then got on the scoreboard with a 7 play, 80 yard drive that featured a 44 yard run by tailback Marcus Jester and a 15 yard touchdown pass from QB Scott Sinovich to Thayer Weaver and the first quarter ended with the Hawks leading 14-7.  Although Central fumbled the ensuing kick off, the Spartans were not able to move the ball and missed a 23 yard field goal.  The Hawks then drove the ball 80 yards on 14 plays, that was capped off with a 4 yard touchdown run from tailback Kevin Batt, to take a commanding 21-7 lead.  The teams traded punts and with just under 5 minutes to go in the half, Batt scored again on a 5 yard TD run, making the score 28-7 and looking as though the Hawks would run away with this game.  De Smet, however, was able to mount an 80 yard drive in six plays and scored on a 23 yard pass from Sinovich to Griffen Palmer and the teams went into half time at 28-14.  The Spartans had won the coin toss and deferred to the second half, but were not able to move the ball on their opening possession.  The Hawks, trying to put the game away, threw an ill advised pass on their second play and Spartan defensive back Dedrick Cromartie intercepted the Glass pass and ran it pack for a pick six and all of the sudden, De Smet was back in the game 28-21.  Hazelwood Central then turned to their star tailback Kevin Batt who carried the ball six times for 75 yards and it was back to a two score lead at 35-21.  The Spartans then turned to their star tailback Marcus Jester who carried the ball 4 times for 56 yards to get into scoring position where Sinovich hit Weaver for a 28 yards touchdown and the score stood at 35-28 heading into the 4th quarter.  Neither team was able to score in the final period and the game ended with the Hawks winning the second shootout of the season between these two teams and send them into the quarterfinals against CBC next weekend.

The Lions Choice 212 Athlete of the game went to Hazelwood Central running back Kevin Batt, who rushed 25 times for 175 yards and 2 touchdowns.
