Rob Kodner Blog – Week 10 – Oakville / Mehlville

Kodner2011 Oakville mehlvilleClick here for the game – This was a renewal of the back yard rivalry between Mehlville and Oakville which last took place just two weeks ago when the Tigers came from behind with 21 points in the 4th quarter to defeat the Panthers 35 -23.  This contest, however, had more at stake with it being the first round of District play.  The game got off to an exciting start when on Oakville’s second possession Mehlville’s linebacker Alvin Sales intercepted an Andy Oliver pass on the Tiger’s 35 yard line.  On two running plays by Mehlville’s quarterback Brendan Moore, the Panthers were in the end zone and took a 7-0 lead.  Mehlville having momentum on their side scored on their next possession on a 67 yard drive that was highlighted by a 36 yard run by Mike Mik as he broke several tackles and the first period ended with the Panthers on top 14-0.  Oakville then went to work and orchestrated an 80 yard drive that was capped off with a 5 yard touchdown run from D’Juan Reeves.  Mehlville then answered with a 59 yard drive of their own as they sent the game into halftime on top 21-6.  On the first series of the second half, Oakville began a drive that was thwarted with an interception by linebacker Matt Mik and preserving the lead for Mehlville.  The game started to heat up as Oakville engineered a 69 yard drive that ended with a 26 yard touchdown pass from Oliver to Carvon Robinson.  Mehlville answered back with an electrifying 60 yard touchdown pass on a halfback option from Matt Mik to Kyle Bean and the score was 28-13.  But it did not stay that way for long as Oakville responded with a 64 yard touchdown run by Reeves and the teams went into the 4th with the Panthers on top 28-19.  The Tigers tried to reduce the deficit, but were once again intercepted by Matt Mik and it looked like the Panthers would run out the clock.  With less than 5 minutes left in the game, Oakville intercepted a Brendan Moore pass on their own 21 yards line.  Quickly they mounted a drive that would be capped off with a touchdown pass from Oliver to Arsante Conners and with two and a half minutes to go the Panthers clung to a 28-25 lead.  The on-side kick was unsuccessful and Mehlville was able to run out the clock and escape with an upset victory over their closest rival.

The Lion’s Choice 212 Athlete of the game went to Mehlville’s Matt Mik, who intercepted two passes and threw a 60 yard halfback option pass for a touchdown.
