Rob Kodner / Charlie Kennedy Blog – Week 7 – Oakville / Mehlville

This backyard rivalry between two 3-3 team got off to a most unusual start with Mehlville blocking an Oakville punt that rolled out of the back of the end zone for a safety.  The two teams then proceeded to trade turnovers as the Panthers threw and interception and fumbled twice, giving Oakville great field position at the Panther’s 36 yard line where Caron Robinson carried the ball 4 consecutive times and a touchdown.  Oakville went for two and the score was 8-2.  The Tigers fumbled on their next possession and Mehlville linebacker Daverion Merridith pick up the ball and scampered into the end zone and putting Panthers up 9-8.  After trading punts early in the second quarter, Oakville engineered a 6 play 72 yards drive that was capped off with a 12 yard Kyle Hearn run for a touchdown.  On the ensuing kick off, Mehlville’s star running back Mike Mik returned the ball 91 yards for a touchdown and they went into halftime with the Panthers on top 17-14, even though they had not scored on offense.  The second half belonged to the Tigers.  Neither team scored in the third period, however in the final stanza Oakville quarterback Andy Oliver took control of the game as he rushed for 129 and two touchdowns, including an 80 dash to the end zone.  In a most unusual and exciting game, it was the Tigers prevailing on senior night 35-23.
