Click here for the game – It was a Suburban South match up between the 5-3 Parkway North Vikings and the 5-2 Webster Groves Statesmen. Webster was ranked #4 in the area by STL Today and was looking for a victory on Senior night as a tune up for District play next week. It would be the 14th meeting between Coach Bob Bunton of the Vikings and Cliff Ice for the Statesmen. The game got off to a slow start with both teams trading punts on the first two possessions. Webster’s DB Dorsey Lawrence intercepted a Collin Weber pass and the Statesmen were in business on the Parkway 38 yard line. It took Webster just 4 plays to score on a 8 yard touchdown pass from QB Rob Thompson to John Thomas and the Statesmen lead 7-0. On Webster’s next possession, they drove the ball 74 yards down to the Viking 1 yard line where they failed to get the ball into the end zone on 3 attempts. The Parkway North defense held and inspired the offense to drive the ball 99 yards on 3 running plays which included a 67 yards run by Tim Cruesoe and a 25 yard touchdown run by fullback Phillip Stokes. The extra point was missed and the score stood at 7-6 with just a couple of minutes before halftime. Webster went into their two minute drill and on 5 pass completions put the ball into the end zone on a 8 yard pass from Thompson to Cameron Hilton. The teams went into halftime with Webster on top 13-6. Neither team scored in the third period as both defenses turned the game into a punting contest. It appeared that the game would end with the halftime score, as the Statesmen held the ball with less than 2 minutes left in the game and a third and 8 situation with the ball at mid field. Parkway North was down to only one time out and Webster elected to attempt a pass to give them a first down which would allow them to run out the clock. Viking cornerback Quran Williams intercepted Thompson’s pass and ran it back 55 yards for a pick six and tied the score at 13 all with 1:41 left on the clock. On Webster’s next possession Thompson threw another interception at the Parkway North 17 yard line. With only 50 seconds left on the clock in regulation, the Vikings connected on a halfback pass that covered 49 yards down to the Webster 12. With 9 seconds on the clock, Freshman Viking kicker Jack Faron missed a 25 yard field goal and the game went into overtime. The Vikings won the toss and surprisingly elected to take the ball. On their 4th play the scored an a pass from Weber that bounced off the pads of tight end Daniel Graeler into the waiting arms of tailback Roosevelt Abram. North missed the extra point and Webster took possession knowing that they had to get the ball into the end zone for the game to continue. The Viking defense again rose to the task as the stopped the Statesmen on 4 downs and they upset the 4th ranked Statesmen by a score of 19-13.
