The tightly played first quarter saw each team having “runs and a 10-9 Borgia lead.  Jake DeWeese was a key element of Dragon offense in the 1st quarter. Luke Deline (Borgia, Soph) drained two 3-balls during this stretch. He’d finish the game with six treys and 19 points for the night.

Borgia pulled ahead by 9 points late in the 2nd quarter with a 24-15 lead. Deline had a dozen points by halftime. In the waning minutes of the half, SM scored five consecutive points to cut the lead to a 24-20 Borgia lead. Josh Robinson had 13 points at the halftime buzzer for SM.

In the 3rd quarter, Borgia Coach Dave Neier decided to work the ball inside to his post players, who had several inches on the Dragons. Joe Helfrich and Adam Meyer became the targets of Zac Schweissguth’s inside passes.  Borgia led 35-30 at the end of 3.  DeShawn Wilson was very strong on the boards during this quarter. He’d finish the game with a game-high 17 rebounds and 3 blocks!

Early in the 4th, Josh Robinson gave the Dragons their first lead since the 1st quarter as his basket made it 43-41-SM. Borgia, using their inside strength, took a 42-37 lead.  Luke Deline fouled out at the 1:26 mark for SFB. SFB still had a slim 43-41 lead in the final seconds when they missed the front end of a 1 &1. On the next possession, Josh Robinson canned two straight charity tosses to tie it at 43-43. Each team had very late possessions but came up empty so we headed to overtime.

The first OT was a high scoring 4 minutes of action as each team scored ten points.  Josh Robinson went on a tear for SM. He finished the game with a game-high 37 points including 18 of 21 from the line.  SFB used the inside scoring of Joe Helfrich (scored 16 for the game) and the outside scoring of their leading scorer, Walter Eckelkamp, in this first OT. Eckelkamp finished with 7 points for the night. It was tied at 53-53 at the 1st OT buzzer.

In the 2nd OT, DeShawn Wilson opened up the scoring with two FT for SM but Zac Schweissguth immediately tied it up with a floating tear-drop jumper. After lengthy possessions, SM saw James Wiggins make a FT and on the next possession DeShawn Wilson also dropped in a FT to give the Dragons a 57-55. Adam Meyer converted two straight FT’s (57-57) in the final seconds.  SM‘s last offensive opportunity in this OT was unproductive so we moved to overtime #3!

Matt Causino hit a 3-pointer from the deep left corner to open up this OT period. A 3 point lead was the largest at ANY time of the game for the Dragons! Borgia came right back with a 2-point basket. After a long possession, the Dragons committed a turnover (only 4 turnovers for the game for SM). After a FT miss, a block by DeShawn Wilson, Joe Helfrich scored to give SFB back the lead 61-60. DeShawn Wilson was fouled on the next possession.  At the line with lots of pressure, Wilson banged home both FT and SM regained the lead 62-61. Josh Robinson hit both ends of a double-bonus to make it 64-61. Dragons outscore SFB at the line 25-4! Helfrich scored for SFB cutting it to 64-63 and an immediate timeout was called. SFB fouled immediately and SM missed both tosses with 7 seconds left. Borgia raced down the court, got off a short floating jumper that was long, then missed short on a 5 ft put-back as the buzzer sounded. It was a very entertaining game with each team having several opportunities to win it prior to the final buzzer.  SM 64  Borgia 63
