The annual “Early Out” game had just about everything. It was a packed house with both large cheering sections highly engaged in the game. The two top scorers in the AAA Conference each scored 30 (or more points). SM had their “run” in the first half and DB in the 2nd half. The Dragons held on for a 68-65 AAA Conference victory but there were plenty of anxious moments for each team. Watch the exciting replay on demand at –

SM came out of the chutes flying as they raced to a 9-2 early lead. By the end of the first quarter, the Dragons held a 18-8 lead when Matt Causino hit a 3 pointer just a tad prior to the buzzer. William Kayser kept the Cavaliers in the game during this stretch as he knocked down 5 points and engineered the offense. Kayser (5.6 ppg) finished the game with 19 points including five buckets from beyond the arc.

The Dragons came out blazing again! Running off an 8-2 stretch, the scoreboard read 26-10 after Josh Robinson had drilled a Loonnnggg 3-pointer. Jake DeWeese scored some buckets from the paint area to chip in on the offense. At halftime, Josh Robinson led all scorers with 18 while Joe Carr had 5 points during the first half. It was 34-18 at halftime as SM had played one of their strongest halves of the season with good ball movement, solid rebounding ( DeShawn Wilson grabbed most of his ten rebounds in the 2nd quarter) and some slick passes.

The 3rd quarter began with SM and DB trading points. It was 44-27 midway in the quarter when Soph Jared Hall scored a twice under the basket after outstanding inside pass work. These points, Hall’s only points of the game, seemed to bring to life the Cav offense. Joe Carr came alive and William Kayser continued to drain the 3-balls as DB ran off a 15-6 spurt to cut the lead to 50-42-SM. Carr scored the last 4 points of the quarter in the waning seconds on fast break baskets so it was SM by 52-46 margin. Tristan Papes, rebound leader for DB with 9 boards, had a strong quarter.

When Josh Robinson hit both ends of a 1&1 in mid-quarter, it was still 61-42-SM.  After Robinson’s FT, DB had treys from David Hennen and Joe Carr and a driving basket by Hennen and suddenly it was a scant 1 point game-61-60! The crowd was going crazy at this point! Robinson hit 4 consecutive FT on 2 different trips down the court, SM breathed easier 65-60. Carr sliced through the Dragon defense for a basket. Robinson hits 3 of 4 on the next 2 trips and the lead was stretched to 68-62. A late 3 by Carr gave us the final of 68-65. For the most part it was a battle between Robinson (SM) and Carr (DB) in the 4th quarter. Robinson scored all of the Dragon 16 points in this quarter and Carr dropped in 14 during the final quarter. Robinson had 48 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals for the game. DB’s Joe Carr finished with 30 points, 7 of 7 from the line, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals.
