The Ste. Genevieve Dragons improved to a number 3 seed in the upcoming
Class 3 District 1 football playoffs with a 21-17 victory at
Caruthersville Friday night. Junior running back Austin Brewer had 26
carries for 172 yards and a pair of touchdowns behind a determined
offensive line to lead the way.
The combination of the Dragons win and a loss by St. Pius (Festus) to
Valle Catholic propelled Ste. Gen into the #3 seed and a first round
home game with #6 Kennett Friday night.
The Tigers opened the scoring on a 35 yard field goal by Trevonne
Leatherwood, his first of 3 FG’s, with 8:24 left in the opening quarter
to take a 3-0 lead. The Dragons answered with a 12 play, 81 yard drive,
capped by a Brewer 3 yard TD run with 4:00 left in quarter one.
Leatherwood answered with a 27 yard field goal, capping an 8 play 42
yard drive, to make it 7-6 at the 5:17 mark of the 2nd quarter.
Ste. Genevieve scored the final points of the half as they went on a 9
play, 54 yard drive, and scored on a 14 yard Wyatt Lalamandier to Drew
Schmelzle touchdown pass with only 1:39 left in the half for a 14-6
The Dragons scored on their first possession of the third quarter, going
70 yards in 2 plays, as Brewer tallied his 2nd TD of the night on a 43
yard run and the third Schmelzle extra point of the night made it 21-6
just 46 seconds into the second half.
Caruthersville came right back with a 3 play, 58 yard drive, as running
back Daniel Fugate scored on a 30 yard run and QB Peyton Faulkner ran in
the 2 point conversion to make it 21-14 with 10:25 left in the 3rd
quarter. Fugate ended the night with 26 carries for 205 yards.
The Tigers had a golden opportunity to take the lead late in the third
with a first and goal at the 2, but a bad snap forced them to settle for
a 30 yard field goal by Leatherwood, making it 21-17 with 4:22
Each team penetrated to the others’ 25 yard line in the 4th quarter, but
the Dragons made a late defensive stand and got a 4th and 4 defensive
stop at their 25. Defensive end AJ Gonz had a terrific game for the
Dragons with 10 tackles, 3 for losses, and an interception.
Ste. Gen finished the night with 295 total yards on 51 plays, 267 on the
ground. Freshman Luke Brewster added 11 carries for 54 yards. The Tigers
had 390 yards of offense led by Fugate’s 205 yards rushing of their 317.
Kennett (5-4) actually finished 5th in the final District standings, but
Dexter moved up to the 5th spot, thanks to a head to head win over the
Indians. Ste. Gen is now 6-3 while Caruthersville fell to 5-4.
Valle Catholic completed a perfect 9-0 regular season and won their 24th
