Surprising or Shocking by Bob Ryan

shock imageShocking at the time….In 1989…on this date…Tom Landry got fired ….some couldn’t believe it when they checked Landry’s coaching achievements ….

He won two Super Bowl titles (VI, XII), 5 NFC titles, 13 Divisional titles, and compiled a 270-178-6 record, the 3rd most wins of all time for an NFL coach. He also won 20 career playoff games, the most in NFL history.

If an event like that happened in 1989…what could happen in 2016? Well…here goes…

…..surprising from many different perspectives…..according to the MLB Network’s top 100 MLB players for 2016…Matt Carpenter was listed at #88! …that’s right #88….Randall Grichuk was listed at #44…some of the other unbelievable players listed above him were…#8 Manny Machado, #28 Yoenis Cespesdes. #56 Brian McCann and others…clearly this voting board assumes that Carp (now 30 years old) is headed south in his production..other Cards listed were: Adam Wainwright was #51, #64 was Yadi, Johnny Peralta at #70, #73 found Carlos Martinez..The other side of the coin is that there are 6 Cards listed in the top 100 MLB players – a league with 30 teams…surprised?

….a heavy surprise…..Derrick Henry came in at 247 pounds in the preliminary rookie NFL evaluations…when he “matures” to a 20+ year man…he’ll be 260+…there aren’t many running backs that last long and even less at a rumbling 260…I question his initial starting speed…his quickness to the LOS…I wouldn’t take him in the 1st round…maybe that’s surprising to some? Btw…he’s the first non-QB to win the Heisman since 2009 when another Alabama running back, Mark Ingram won the Heisman. Ingram has yet to crack the 1000 yard barrier as an NFL running back! Btw…Could you name those 5 Heisman QB ?

….don’t be surprised…with seemingly everyone and their brother working out at 1B for the Cards…are they creating an opening in the OF for someone? Will it be Carlos Gonzalez of Colorado? Ryan Braun? Joey Votto? Or some other seasoned hitter?

….shocking…..Can you believe that Edward Mujica is reported to have the inside track for the closer role of the Phillies as he comes into camp as a non-roster player…man…that’s sketch…you aren’t even on the roster and they discuss you as a closer…ugh!….now I know that the Phils are probably the very worst team in the NL but Mujica flamed out as a closer decades ago(or so it seems) for the Cards…he’s probably real cheap since he’s non-roster

….here’s a startling suggestion for the Blues…I’m happy that you didn’t tinker at the trading deadline….it hasn’t worked recently and its cost you some draft choices…former GM Ron Caron couldn’t sleep at the trading deadline because he was so “itchy” to modify the Blues…usually, it seems to me…its much ado about nothing…its surprising that they think that they MUST do it every year…and it flops….so let’s try something new…skip it

….not real surprising…the Rams cut the two players with the longest ties to St. Louis? sure…. James Laurinaitis and Chris Long probably could or should have been cut (over the last few weeks of the season many teams were running right at Laurinaitis & Long suffered nagging injuries for 2 years) but now EVERY player should be excited to arrive in LA as a fresh start…

…still surprising…..in 2015 the Cards were 2nd in the MLB in attendance for the 2nd straight year..avg 43,468/game.. that’s mildly surprising but when one looks at the mega-size city teams only the Dodgers (who were #1) were real contenders while the Cubs are hindered by the match-box size of their stadium…Royals had the biggest jump in attendance—averaging 9,285 more fans per game!

…shocking suggestion….along those lines of MLB attendance listed above…its surprising to me that the MLB remains in Florida…both of those teams draw flies (Miami is #28 & Tampa is dead last at #30)…I would try a team in Oklahoma or Charlotte …too much else to do in Florida and who wants to sit in that summer sun?

…you aren’t surprised because you didn’t know…..the UMSL softball team (16-1) is rated #5 in DII softball nationally…although 8 seniors graduated from last years 48-8 team, star pitcher Hannah Perryman is back for her senior year. Perryman hurled her 13th career no-no (4th all-time in NCAA DII records) this week and now has pushed the all-time strikeout record past 1300 strikeouts in her career—only 6th pitcher to ever reach that total.

….are u kidding me surprise….it’s very surprising to me is that Carlos Marmol is back! Yes…the Red Sox are thinking that they know how to resurrect this 33 year old righthander who often can’t find the plate during crunch times…good luck…

….absolutely shocking….two NBA teams have yet to lose a home game for the entire home schedule…San Antonio is 29-0 and Golden State is 25-0 In their home games for 2015-16 season

…shocking but not surprising …I hardly watch college basketball until the “Big Dance”…but I was very stunned to read a title of an article “Is Grayson Allen the next hated White Duke Player?”… I’m clueless about Grayson Allen’s play but the title ….could you imagine a title like the” next hated Black/Latino/European player” ever being used? How so with this title?

…shocking and surprising …..just to keep you fully apprised of the newest villain in baseball (according to Cards fans)…the Cubs announced at 11:02 on Feb 28 that Dexter Fowler had signed with them….then to their complete surprise, at 11:25 Theo Epstein walks into the team meeting taking place on the field with no else other than …yep…Dexter Fowler….most of the Cubs players couldn’t’ believe their eyes as they saw him approaching from the outfield with Epstein

…really surprised… yet again…. by how much Mike Keenan messed up the Blues…when reading an article on Wayne Gretzke’s brief days as a Blue…it was Keenan who wanted him (traded several players) and Keenan who drove him away..btw…Keenan is coaching a team in Russia these days…just won the KHL cup—that “title” sounds like something men would buy at a sporting goods store for protection—now that is really surprising to me

….no surprise ….you made it to the bottom.

Leave it to Bob to get Carlos Marmol, Ediie Mujica and Mike Keenan in the same column along with kind of a compliment to the Blues organization. Well done. Oh and by the way…… Mike Keenan was a bigger #$@@!! than Vern Rapp!! He is right where he should be – on the Russian Front!
How about the shocker that Matt Holliday could be YOUR starting first baseman?
