The Awards Draft by Bob Ryan

While the NFL draft drives even mildly interested fans into becoming “experts” on this guy or that guy, we have a different type of draft. This draft is for awards….so maybe flattering others not so much. Btw…I do think that the Rams may pick yet another WR and fill up with o-lineman later.

…Choosing the “turn it around” Award is….

The national politicians should have a “review board” to review all THEIR actions just as they’re doing for our law enforcement officers.

…Choosing the “Best Start since 2006” Award is…

The Houston Astros who are now 10-7 and in 1st place of AL West

 …Choosing the Barnum & Baily Award is…

The Texas Rangers who actually want Hamilton back! Don’t they get it…this guy’s body is gone after the drug abuse…..yes…there is a sucker born every minute.

…Choosing the Jekyll & Hide (I know it’s the wrong Hyde) Award is…

The Blues fans…these fans want to canonize their heroes when they win and send these same players to the guillotine when they lose. However, I do really feel sorry for them…with their passion and the endless trips on the playoff treadmills (that take them no place) and yet they just keep coming….god bless em’…

…Choosing the “Real test of our Depth” award is…

The St. Louis Cardinals pitching staff. Marco the Magician will be up soon. I’m not in agreement with all to clamor for Cole Hamels when the Phils will demand Grichuk, a young-proven starter, + another.

The Cards may go out and get another starter but MO often goes to the shopping sales to find his bargains.

…Choosing the “Next Blockbuster on the Speech Circuit Award” is…

Barack Obama! His presentation at the news writers dinner last night was actually clever, funny and entertaining…I mean compare it to Ms. Clinton’s presence, speeches, sad look and everything else and she’s made millions on the talk circuit…

…Choosing the “No Tiger Tales” this year award is….

Mizzou football team….when the defense plays vanilla in spring game and the offense still can’t move the ball….believe me SEC teams won’t be vanilla when blitzing Mattie Mauk

…Choosing the “My Arm Can’t do This Long” Award…

Jordan Walden who has been 11 of the Cards first 16 games..btw…I think he balks on every pitch…I recall that one had to be in contact with pitching plate at time of delivery…watch him

…Choosing the “Don’t Repeat History” Award goes to…

Tampa Bay…when knuckleheads are picked #1 overall (Clowney of last year) they often don’t pan out. I realize that 4 of the last 6 #1 picks were QB (Luck, Newton, Bradford, Strafford) and the horrible 2007 choice of Jamarcus Russell…I would choose Mariotta over Winston

…Choosing the “Who would have thunk it” Award…

The NYY who have a middle reliever with 3 wins after the first 2 weeks—Betances… How does that happen?

…Choosing the “You’re really the Cubs” Award is…

The St. Louis Blues….we’ve run through multiple coaches (the top 4 winningest coaches were all Blues coaches at 1 time), multiple players, multiple schemes, various opponents…it doesn’t seem to matter—we are the Cubs of Hockey

 ….Choosing the “Civic Award” is….

The ST Louis Cardinals who brought up, and kept until the pitched, a Naval Acad graduate, Mitch Harris. If he’s sent down in the next few days, never to be seen again….it was all for civics…. Let’s hope it’s more than that

…Choosing the “Our Give-aways will be better than the Games” Award is…

The Cardinals Promotion Dept as they have to wade through a series against the pitiful Phillies team. On Saturday, the Phils had FOUR guys below .200 in the starting lineup (including Utley & Howard) while rolling up a paltry 6-12 record.

…Choosing the Back from the Dead Award is….

Jason Marquis…he didn’t make any MLB team all of last year…this 36 year old is now on his 10th major league team! He was on the Cardinals way back in 2004, 05, and 06. My crystal ball says he won’t be wearing a MLB uni by July 4th.

 ….Choosing the “A New Approach” Award is….

The Atlanta Braves, who apparently have taken a different approach or different expectations, with Shelby Miller who is now 3-0 with a 2.05 era. He’s gone 5-6 innings each game so maybe the Braves are pleased with their starter giving up a 1 or 2 runs in the first 2/3 of the game.

…Choosing the “Ya better get out quick “award is…

The Kentucky Derby where 20 horses are expected to race on Saturday. How many more can they string along the starting line? Soon the starting line will have to resemble a NASCAR start with rows?!

 …Choosing the “String U Along” Award is…

The NFL as St Louis is fighting to have a franchise in the future. With SD/Oakland proposing their own stadium, I think that our chances have decreased. I’ve given up on a Kronke owned team being here but still am holding, ever so slightly, the hopes of Oakland coming here….but I do think that StL is the wedge for the NFL to get TWO new stadiums in the LA area.

…Choosing the “Get Out the Big Broom” Award is…

The St. Louis Blues…I think we’ve seen the last of TJ Oshie, Jackman, Backes, Bowmeester (2 goals all year—come on)

 …Choosing the “2 page reading award” is…

YOU…thx for reading……comments on draft picks of any kind (Rams or mine) are welcome

  1. Tom Williams says:

Jackman walks, Oshie gets traded along with Berglund, Backes and Bouwmeester stays because of No-Trade Clauses. I’d like to see them move Oshie and Berlund for a serious offensive threat of equal value, maybe Kessel? Tarasenko gets a huge contract.
