Turnovers lead to season ending loss for Ste. Gen.

prepcasts ste gen logoThe 2015 football season ended in atypical fashion for Ste. Genevieve
(10-2) Friday night. A team that went into their Class 3 District
Championship game against Park Hills Central (10-2) with a +13
takeaway-giveaway ratio turned it over 5 times in a 35-28 loss to the
Rebels.

The Dragons jumped out 6-0 early on a first possession 3 play, 66 yard
drive, as Sr. RB Anthony Roe followed a 51 yard run with an 11 yard
jaunt to pay dirt. The extra point try was wide just :57 into the game.
PH Central came right back on a 5 play-65 yard drive as Sr. QB Jake
Bridges hit soph. slot receiver Tristan Campbell on a 38 yard completion
and with the Bridges 1st of 5 extra points it was 7-6 with 8:24 to go in
the opening quarter.

Back to back Dragon turnovers led to the Rebels next 2 scores. After a
Roe pick at his own 5, he fumbled it right back to PHC at the 10. Two
plays later, Bridges threw his 2nd of 4 TD passes to Keenan Johnson from
9 yards out and it was 14-6 with 10:33 left in the half. On the next
play from scrimmage, Kyle Halter picked off a deflected Wyatt
Lalumandier pass at the SG 31. 6-3, 235 pound fullback Drew Harlow
rumbled 17 yards for the TD to finish off a 2 play drive. It was 21-6
Rebels just :48 later.

Ste. Gen penetrated inside the Central 30 on their next possession but
fumbled it away for their 3rd turnover of the first half and it was 21-6
Rebels at the intermission.

The Dragons grabbed some momentum early in the 3rd when Roe picked off a
Bridges pass and rambled 32 yards to the house on a pick 6 and with a 2
point Austin Brewer run, it was 21-14 with 10:09 left.

The Rebels countered with an 11 play, 79 yard drive, and a 32 yard
Bridges to John Goheen TD pass to increase the lead to 28-14 with 4:27
remaining in the 3rd.

Ste Gen did not quit and countered with a 5 play, 42 yard drive and
Brewer scored from the 2. The Dragons went for 2 and failed, keeping it
at 28-20 6:35 from the finish.

The biggest play of the game occurred with 4:17 left when the Rebels
went for it on 4th and 1 from their own 44 and Bridges found Campbell
again on a play action bootleg from 56 yards out to finish off a 4
play-65 yard drive and a 35-20 advantage.

SG’s Luke Brewster returned the following kickoff 58 yards to the Rebel
25 and 4 plays later Lalumandier hit Blake Moore for a TD from 9 yards
away and with the Lalumandier 2 point run it was 35-28 with 2:31 left.

A 3 and out gave the Dragons one more shot with 2:00 remaining as they
started from the PHC 47 following a short punt. They moved it to the 21
before they were stopped on downs and the Rebels survived.

The Dragons finished with 32 rushing plays for 255 yards and Lalumandier
was 7-19 for 72 to give SG 327 yards of total offense. PHC was held to
82 yards rushing on 39 carries, but Bridges completed 14-23 for 262
yards and 344 yards of total offense.

Roe ended his high school career with 15 carries for 122 yards and
Brewer had 13 for 82. Harlow was held to 20 carries for 71 yards.

Valle Catholic from Ste. Genevieve won their 42nd straight game over 3
seasons, tying them for the 5th longest winning streak in the country,
as they rolled over previously undefeated Mark Twain, 44-0, in a Class 1
District Championship Game. Tristan Huck had 3 TD’s and ran for 88
yards. Sr. QB Connor Basler threw for 239 yards and 3 TD passes, raising
his total to 53, as the Warriors improved to 12-0.

They will travel to Thayer (11-1) for a 1:00 Saturday afternoon game in
the Class 1 Quarterfinals. You can hear that contest on Prepcasts Ste.
