The Warriors overcame 6 turnovers and injuries to 3 two-way starters,
Tristan Huck, Nick Oberle, and Zach Viox. The teams traded turnovers in
the first minute of the game.
Valle penetrated to the Bobcats 10 and 6 in the first half before
fumbling and then turning the ball over on downs. The Warriors out first
downed Thayer 14-3 in the opening 24 minutes, but it was scoreless at
The Warriors finally broke on top early in the 3rd quarter with a 10
play, 61 yard drive, culminated on a 1 yard run by SR. QB Connor Basler
with 7:30 to go in the 3rd quarter. Sr. Devon Kutz added his first of
two extra points for a 7-0 lead. The blue clad school from Ste.
Genevieve got the ball back two minutes later and went on a 5 play, 63
yard drive, fueled by backup Sr. RB Zach Viox, who took it to the house
the final 29 yards down the left sidelines for a 14-0 VC lead. That came
with 4:07 left in the 3rd. Viox had 11 carries for 64 yards in his “next
man up” role.
Valle extended the lead to 17-0 early in the 4th quarter with a 9
play-52 yard drive. Kutz banged home a 32 yard FG with 11:23 left in the
very physical game.
The Bobcats were called for intentional grounding and moved back to
their own 5 a few seconds later before Matt Griffith went 95 yards for
the only Thayer TD on the day to make it 17-7 with 11:02 to go.
The Warriors Basler had a punt blocked at his own 10 with under 5
minutes remaining, but Thayer settled for a 25 yard Landon Tyler field
goal with 3:35 left.
Valle took over at the Bobcats 44 following a failed onside kick
attempt, but turned the ball over at the Thayer 35 on an ill advised
pass and interception with 40 seconds remaining. Kutz’s pick with 5
seconds to go ended the suspense and the Warriors survived. The Bobcats
had 4 turnovers.
Valle out first downed Thayer 26-6 and finished with 79 plays for 460
yards of total offense. Basler was 16-34 for 265 yards. Garrett Jaegers
had 5 catches for 102 yards. The Bobcats ran 56 plays for 263 yards.
Three plays totaled 169 yards for the Bobcats, and the other 56 plays
only 94 yards, 1.7 yards per play. QB Aiden Henry was 2-14 for 74 yards.
The Warriors advance to the semifinals against Marceline (12-1) Saturday
afternoon at Fr. John Dempsey Field in Ste. Genevieve. Game time is
1:00. The Tigers have shut out their last 7 opponents.
